Virgil Shrewsbury

SPANISHBURG – Virgil Burton Shrewsbury, 81, of Spanishburg passed from this life on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Charleston Area Medical Center, Charleston, WV after battling several medical conditions for the past two months. With him at the time of his death were his loving wife, Georgia Lou, her cousin, Kay Midkiff and Pastor Larry Dyer. Born June 26, 1931 at Beeson he was the youngest of five children of the late Leeton and Stella Burton Shrewsbury. As a young boy he enjoyed spending time with his grandfather, O. H. Burton and working in his store and post office in Beeson. He was a graduate of Spanishburg High School, Class of 1951. Virgil retired from the Dean Company of Princeton after 27 years, the latter part of which he served as Supervisor. He was also a former employee of Shrewsbury's Garage and Cline Motors, both of Princeton and a veteran of the U. S. Army, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He was a member of the Woodmen of The World, Princeton Lodge 217. He was of the Protestant faith. He enjoyed working with the cattle on his farm, woodworking, flea marketing and playing with his cats, Socks, Gracie and Green Richmond. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charlie and Carrie Walker and sister-in-law, Verne Walker, all of whom he loved dearly; three brothers-in-law, Howard, Dominic and Curtis and one sister-in-law, Lorraine. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Georgia Lou; one brother, Howard Shrewsbury of Dublin, VA; three sisters, Opal Pittelli of North Fort Myers, FL, Delma Louise McCormick of Blythewood, SC and Josephine Dunagan of Princeton; his very special niece, Kathy Rose and husband Bill and the "apple of Virgil's eye," their daughter Sally Marie all of North Fort Myers, FL; niece Judy McCormick and nephew Michael McCormick and wife Cindy of Blythewood, SC. Virgil had many friends and acquaintances, including special friends, Jack and Mavis Blankenship, Clyde and Kathy Hartley and Sharon and Robert Wood. Sharon was with Georgia at CAMC and was a source of support and comfort to her during this difficult time as well as the doctors and nurses on 3 South at CAMC. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2012 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Larry Dyer officiating and niece Kathy Rose delivering a eulogy. Music will be rendered by Pastor Larry Dyer and wife Myra and Danny Buckner. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2012 in the Garden of Nativity at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military honors will be provided by West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard. Friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:45 a.m. Monday. Serving as pallbearers will be Clyde Hartley, Jack Blankenship, David Wert, Tim Truitt, Ronnie Meadows, Mac Howell, Sam Conner, Johnny Midkiff, Arthur Christian and Garfield Kirk. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Larry Truitt, Robert Wood, Jerry Alvis, James Repass, Glen Shrewsbury, Larry Profitt and David Anderson. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Christian Community Church, Building Fund, 120 Blackoak Road, Princeton, WV 24740. Family will receive friends Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
