Glen Shrewsbury

LASHMEET – Glen Earnest Shrewsbury, 81, of Lashmeet, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Westwood Center in Bluefield, VA. Born November 2, 1929 at Arista, he was the son of the late William Martin and Martha Susan Akers Shrewsbury. Mr. Shrewsbury was baptized in 1950 and had attended Lashmeet Freewill Baptist Church, Cooks Chapel and currently was a member of Rich Creek Baptist Church. He loved the special singing. He worked in the Timber business with his brothers and at the Texaco gas station in Matoaka. He later went to work in the coal mines in Herndon and retired in 1986. As a young man he loved to coon hunt, fish, and deer and turkey hunt. He always had “little stories” to tell about people and things that happened while on those adventures. He loved the planned fishing trips with family and friends. He took great pride in helping his three children build their homes. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters, Kester Shrewsbury, Gladys McCroskey, Elmer Shrewsbury, Dessie Bailey, Raymond Shrewsbury, Audrey Perdue, Oscar Shrewsbury, Dewey Shrewsbury, Stella Shrewsbury and June Graham. Left to honor his memory are his wife of 62 years, Betty L. Shrewsbury; two sons, Glen E. Shrewsbury, Jr. and his wife Drema and Joseph (Marty) Shrewsbury and his wife Carla all of Lashmeet; one daughter Carrie White and her husband Donald of Lashmeet; one brother, Carlos Shrewsbury and his wife Pauline of Lashmeet; one sister, Bernice Bowling of Matoaka; two sisters-in-law, Nadine Shrewsbury of Lashmeet; Sarah Roberts of Hartley, DE; one brother-in-law, James Perdue of Greenwood, SC; seven grandchildren, Leigh Kessler and her husband Jerry, Jennifer Bailey and her husband David, Candice Chastain and her husband Josh, Jason Shrewsbury and his wife Audra, Angela Watkins and her husband Chris, Jared Shrewsbury and his wife Kristen and Justin Shrewsbury and his fiancé Jennifer; 11 great-grandchildren, Alex Otey, Adam and Devin Kessler, Kyle Shrewsbury, Maggi Shrewsbury, Bryce Vance, Colin and Conner Bailey and Emma, Bailey and Ethan Glen Chastain; and a host of nieces and nephews, including Freddy “Punkin” Roberts of Hartley, DE. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Ralph Calfee officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
