November 4, 1936 - February 22, 2021
COVEL – Verland D. Cecil, 84 of Covel departed this world and went to be with his Lord and Savior as well as family and friends on Monday, February 22, 2021 at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a tragic car accident. Born November 4, 1936 at Crystal he was the son of the late George Cecil and Gracie White Cecil. Verland was a resident of Covel for 76 years. He was a member of Rhodell Church of God. He was a member of UMWA and was disabled having worked for Eastern Coal Company where he worked as a pumper at the Herndon mines. Verland considered himself a professional piddler. He loved woodworking with a special love for canes and enjoyed showing them off on his multiple trips to Rural King. He loved the gift of gab and prided himself on his ability to talk to anyone. He enjoyed riding his four-wheeler, loved coon hunting and his multiple coon hunting buddies. His favorite new thing was Dairy Queen Blizzards. Verland loved people. His church family meant the world to him and he loved them as his own and couldn’t wait to get there to converse with them. Verland had a very special friend, Rosie Shumate, that cooked for him and kept him supplied in homemade candy and pies. On Verland’s last day of driving he gave a hitchhiker a ride and money. That was the person he was – a man with a heart of gold. The family encourages Red Cross blood donations as Verland required 12 units during his hospitalization. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Delores French Cecil; son, David Cecil; brothers, G. C. Cecil and Dwight Cecil and sister, Janice Cecil. Left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Pamela Belcher and husband Eric of Covel and Anita McBride and husband Terry of Monroe County; son, Verland Donald Cecil, Jr. and wife Belinda of Hickory Grove, SC; grandchildren, Madonna Jessie and Husband Brandon of Beckley, Kayla Canty and husband Patrick of Summsville, MA, Brandon Belcher and wife Victoria of Herndon Heights, Candace Belcher of Gardner Road, Christopher Cecil of Covel, Ashley Cecil and Aryn Cecil of Hickory Grove, SC, Landon Belcher and September Belcher of Covel and fourteen great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home with Rev. J. C. Finley and Rev. Wayne Sanders officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 24 at the funeral home. Arrangements by Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
