PIPESTEM – Sandra Marie-Ann Akers, 28 of Pipestem and Bluefield passed away March 30, 2021 at Raleigh General Hospital after a long courageous battle from spina bifida and other complications. She overcame many obstacles of surgeries, trips to Shriners Hospital in Lexington, KY and elsewhere. Born February 4, 1993, she was the daughter of Rev. Joe Akers and Dolores Hale Akers. Her 28 years were short but full as she had a contagious smile for those who knew her best. Sandra graduated from Pipestem Christian Academy where her teachers and staff went the extra mile to see that her handicaps were minimized. Later, she graduated with an associate degree from National Business College with aspirations to be in the medical profession. Family and friends were important to Sandra. She loved children, music, fishing, traveling, swimming and shopping. She is loved and will be sadly missed by all that knew her. Sandra was preceded in death by her infant son, Nicholas Leslie Ray Xavier Knuckles; brother, Nicholas Akers; uncle, Danny Akers; grandfathers, Vassel Akers, Sr., Robert Brownfield and Maynard Sisk and grandparents, Jack and Beulah Hale. Survivors include her biological parents, Carlisle Collins and Janice Ratliff; grandmothers, Marie Sisk and Barbara Miller; special companion, Terry Skeens and friend Rose; brothers, Shawn Massey, Mark Massey and wife Michelle, Jeremy Roberts and wife Elisabeth; sister, Ashley Dunford and husband Jonathan as well as a host of extended family and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2021 at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Steve Adams and Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. until the service hour. Arrangements by Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
