Charles "Gus" Robertson
July 22, 1938 - January 27, 2022
ALEXANDRIA, VA - Charles Dwight “Gus” Robertson, 83, of Alexandria, VA formerly of Matoaka, WV passed away peacefully on January 27, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Charles is survived by his wife, Freda Loraine Robertson and three daughters: Sherry, of Alexandria, VA with her husband Christopher Minear; Lora, of Midland, VA with her husband James Adams; and Michele of Alexandria, VA with her husband Richard Schuck. Charles has five grandchildren: Richard, Jr., Tiffany, Graceann, Elizabeth and Caitlin, their spouses, and children. Charles Robertson was born July 22, 1938, in Matoaka, a small coal mining town in Mercer County, WV, a community that supported fourteen coal mining operations. Growing up in Appalachia he solidified his faith in God, country, and family. He was proud to be from the place that was “Almost Heaven.” After graduating from Matoaka High School, Charles worked at AMF (American Machine and Foundry) in Alexandria, VA until enlisting in the Army in 1961 and served for the next two years in Germany and completed service in Fort Benning, GA. He was proud that he was a part of Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, known as the Rakkasans. While in the Army, Charles married his sweetheart and best friend Freda Meadows in November 1962. They began their adventure in Fort Benning, GA. They found their way back to Alexandria, and AMF welcomed him back home. Upon leaving AMF, he continued his profession as a purchasing agent for EG&G (Edgerton, Germeshausen, and Grier) and Commonwealth Scientific Corporation. While living in Alexandria, Charles was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing on the softball team. He was an active member of the Bren Mar community and served on the Neighborhood Watch. He raised his family to value community by building long-lasting relationships with his neighbors and simply serving others. Upon retirement, Charles and Freda were afforded the opportunity to return to West Virginia and live on the Robertson Family Farm. As “snowbirds,” they flocked to Dania Beach, FL for the winter season after spending Thanksgiving and Christmas with their daughters. His life returning to the farm brought great joy. He was able to re-connect with family and friends. They found a warm and accepting home to worship the Lord at Willowton Christian Church. Spending most of his time on the family farm over the past two decades brought great contentment and adventure. It kept him busy with various projects and he grew even stronger in his faith. Living on top of East River Mountain, he was surrounded by scenery that drew him to the Bible verse found in the Old Testament book Psalms, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2) Charles enjoyed reading his Bible and singing songs of praise. Charles lived a full life filled with an abundance of memories with his wife and soulmate, Freda. His children and family were his pride and joy. Spending time with his loved ones was his favorite pastime. Charles touched so many people with his gentle spirit, strong faith, wholesome values, and tireless work ethic. Many people have already shared precious memories that attribute to his far-reaching impact on others and his strong steadfast love for his family and friends. Heaven gained another angel to watch over us until we meet again. A visitation of Charles’s life will be held at St. John’s United Methodist Church from 10-11 AM on Wednesday, February 2, with the service following at 11 AM. Charles will take his last trip to WV to continue a celebration of his life and be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. DUE TO WEATHER CONCERNS, a visitation will be held at 10 AM on Friday, February 4, with the service following at 11 AM at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home (1612 Honaker Ave, Princeton, WV 24740) and graveside service at Roselawn at approximately 1 PM with military honors conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Willowton Christian Church (1763 Willowton Road, Princeton, WV 24739) or St. John’s United Methodist Church (5312 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151).
