Verlie Shrewsbury

PRINCETON – Verlie Shrewsbury, 90, of Quail Valley, Princeton, formerly of Wenonah Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born August 30, 1923 at Wenonah Mountain, he was the youngest of 16 children born to Arminta Elizabeth Shrewsbury and William Henderson Shrewsbury. Mr. Shrewsbury was a member of the U.S. Army having served his country in occupied Japan at the end of World War II. He was a member of Crossroads Church in Bluefield. Verlie was born, raised, educated and lived most of his life on the family farm on Wenonah Mountain and he will be buried there. He retired from the WV Department of Highways. He worked hard all of his life, and because of this, it was only in his later years that his family came to know the funny and entertaining man known, in his youth, as the “Old Timey Rhymer.” In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters; his second wife, Margie Little Shrewsbury; a grandson, Jimmy Burnette; and two granddaughters, Mary Burnette and Jennifer Holt. Survivors include his first wife, Sallie Cundiff Shrewsbury and their six children, Wanda Jenkins and her husband Mike, with whom he made his home the past 5 years, Linda Nicholson and her husband Jim of Louisa, VA, Fred Shrewsbury and his wife Kathy of Wenonah Mountain, Brenda Holt and her husband Kenny of Princeton, Rondell Shrewsbury and his wife Nancy of Wenonah Mountain, Richard Shrewsbury and his wife Paige of Princeton and Verlie’s oldest son, Douglas Burnette and his wife Pat of Oxford, PA; three step-children, Anita Browning and her husband Walter of Princeton, Donna and her husband Bret of Glenwood, Dannie Little of Roanoke, VA and Jimmy Little; 22 grandchildren, Robin Rickman, Drenda Williams, Tonya Irizarry, Valorie Higgs, Karry Merritt, Jacob Shrewsbury, Keneth Holt, Matthew Holt, Joshua Holt, Melissa Shrewsbury, Kristy Jackson, John Bibbey, Jared Shrewsbury, Christopher Shrewsbury, Victoria Shrewsbury, Brandon Dinger, Chelsy Dinger, Logan Kilcrease, Rhonda Burnette, Ben Burnette, Jimmy Burnette and Mary Burnette; 12 great-grandchildren, Corey Rickman, Dylan Rickman, Harlan Higgs, Triston Merritt, Ashelin Merritt, Kyle Williams, Hayden Holt, Hailey Holt, Logan Holt, Blake Holt, Damion Jackson and Kaijah Jackson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Travis Lowe officiating. Interment will follow at the Henderson-Shrewsbury Cemetery at Wenonah Mountain.
