Ruby Dalton

PRINCETON – Ruby Carol Johnston Dalton, 72, of Princeton, answered the call from Heaven after a four-year long battle with ovarian cancer to meet her Lord and Savior from her home on Black Oak Mountain Saturday evening, October 16, 2010, just minutes from where she was born to the late William A. and Eva Jane Davis Johnston on January 25, 1938. “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” [1 Corinthians 15:55]. During the years that Carol and Frank lived in Roanoke, VA, they were “Unselfish and Faithful” members of Forest Park Baptist Church. Since moving to Princeton full-time, they have been members of Princeton’s First Baptist Church. Carol retired in May of 2003 from General Electric in Salem, VA with 20 years of service. After retirement, she and her husband, Frank, traveled extensively. Their first big trip was in 2003 to Kansas to welcome a great-granddaughter via just about every state even remotely close to there. They traveled to the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Mount Rushmore, etc. Another trip, to Puerto Rico, welcomed a great-grandson, in 2004. Their next big trip was to Hawaii to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Just after the completion of her first round of chemotherapy, they traveled to China for 21 days with six other family members! Just after Father’s Day this year, they made it to Alaska for one last fling to celebrate their 54th anniversary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Billie Stump; and two brothers, Ralph Johnston and Kenneth Johnston. Leaving behind to join her later are her husband of 54 years, Frank Dalton of Princeton; six children, sons, Sam Dalton and his wife Lori of Hanover, MD, Hugh Dalton and his wife Linda of Roanoke, VA and Andy Dalton and his wife Michelle of Blacksburg, VA; daughters, Sarah Belcher and her husband Rick of VA Beach, VA, Sharon Spangler and her husband Bob of Stafford, VA and Roberta Dalton of Vinton, VA; fifteen grandchildren including Tony Deyerle of Richmond, VA and Steve Deyerle and his wife Raine of Columbia, SC, who were blessed to be raised by her; and nine great-grandchildren with another great-granddaughter expected in November. In addition, she is survived by four brothers and four sisters, Andrew Johnston and his wife Liz of Oxford, OH, Richard Johnston and his wife Pat of Morgantown, Robert Johnston and his wife Gay of Prospect, VA, Douglas Johnston and his wife Brenda of Princeton, Joyce Carre and her husband Ted of Baltimore, MD, Fay Conner and her husband Randy of Bainbridge, OH, Barbara Alderman and her husband Bobby of Radford, VA, Mary Ann Cox and her husband Steve of Cokeville, WY; and scores of adoring nieces and nephews and their families. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to either the general offering fund of Forest Park Baptist Church, 812 29th St., NW, Roanoke, VA 24017 or First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1116 Mercer St., Princeton, WV 24740. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
