Michael Wayne Hartwell

LASHMEET – Michael Wayne Hartwell, 75 of Lashmeet went to Heaven on January 15, 2018 to be with his wife, Roberta, after fighting a battle with bladder and bone cancer. Born October 20, 1942, he was the son of the late Charles Hartwell and Virginia Nesbit Hartwell. He was a member of Hiawatha Gospel Mission and attended Lashmeet Church of God. He was a retired coal miner and business owner, operating M & R Grocery for years. He had a degree in Forestry and Agriculture. His hobbies were coin collecting, trapping, making marble knives, working with wood, painting, digging ginseng, fishing and giving to others. In his younger days, he was a champion in arm wrestling in the eastern United States. Michael loved dressing up like Santa Claus and delivering packages to the less fortunate. He was known as having the golden hand due to his multitude of talents. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Billings Hartwell and brother, Charles Hartwell. Survivors include daughters, Monica Hartwell of the home and Teresa Quesenberry and husband Christopher of Princeton; grandchildren, Ashley and J. P. Surface, Destiny Meadows, Landon Meadows and Austin Smith; brothers, Timothy Hartwell and wife Patty, Jimmy Hartwell and wife Gail, Steve Hartwell and wife Carol, Richard Hartwell and wife Judy and Russell Hartwell and wife Kathy; sister-in-law, Nancy Hartwell; his second mom and aunt, Ellen Elliott and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel with Pastor Gary Raulerson officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Princeton. Pallbearers will be Timmy Hartwell, Richard Hartwell, Stephen Hartwell, Woffard Hartwell, Shawn Hartwell, Christopher Quesenberry, J. P. Surface, Mickey Juba and Austin Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Hartwell, Russell Hartwell and Jimmy Hartwell. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
