Johnny Howerton

MATOAKA – John "Johnny" Howerton, 65, of Matoaka, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, August 22, 2013. Born April 30, 1948 in Covel, he was the son of the late Luther Howerton and Florence Sargent Howerton. Mr. Howerton was born and raised on Arista Mountain. He was a private in the U.S. Army. He worked for 22 years in the coal mines in Herndon and was a member of the UMWA. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved to hunt, fish and work in his garden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, Cameron James; and three brothers, Ernie Howerton, Roosevelt Howerton and Dewey Howerton; and four sisters, Marie Thompson, Gladys Shutt, Nellie Ramsey and infant sister, Fay. Survivors include the mother of his children, whom has been with him throughout his illness, Teresa Ewing; two sons, Luther Howerton of Arista Mountain and John Howerton and his wife Sonya of Andrews, SC; one daughter, Robin Howerton and her special friend Eddie Bennett of the home; two brothers, Roger Howerton of Arista Mountain and Bennett Howerton of Princeton; two sisters, Betty Grandi of Alabama and Imogene Wix of Sophia; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 25, 2013 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton conducted by his family and friends. A military service will follow by the WV National Guard Honor Guard. Honoring his request, the body will be cremated following the service and burial will be at a later date. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Bennett, Jr., Paul Bullins, Wiggles Bullins, Eddie Bennett, Chuckie Pugalee and Brandon Brown-Howerton. Honoring Mr. Howerton's request, he absolutely did not want flowers sent to his service.
