Randy Davis

ROCK – Duane "Randy" Davis, 82, of Rock, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at his home. Born February 27, 1927 at Rock, he was the son of the late Willard T. Davis and Gertie M. Bailey Davis.
Randy was a proud veteran of the US Navy Sea Bees, serving in the Philippines during World War II. He was a retired tipple mechanic from Turkey Gap and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church at Lashmeet. He was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. His hobbies were woodworking, NASCAR, storytelling and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Randy Lee Davis; one sister, Beryle Snider; and four brothers, Douglas Davis, Carl Davis, William Davis and James Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Ramona R. Clark Davis; five sons, Roger Davis and his wife Rhonda of Goochland, VA, Thomas W. Davis and his wife Rhonda and Randy Davis and his wife Emma all of Rock, Steve Davis and his wife Patty of Princeton and Roger Davis, Jr. of Rock; two daughters, Joan Williams and her husband Wayne and Iva Joyce Reynolds and her husband Frank all of Lashmeet; three sisters, Ruth Gearhart, Gail Akers and her husband Harvey and Valerie White all of Rock; three brothers, Robert Davis and his wife Nancy and Ike Davis and his wife Patricia all of Rock and Charles Davis and his wife Velda of Amelia, VA; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great, great-granddaughters; and one expected great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 4, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. Randy E. Davis and Bill Deskins officiating. Interment will follow at Wesley Chapel Cemetery at Rock where military honors will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council and the West Virginia National Guard honor guard.

Joe Richards

PRINCETON – Joe Richards, 77, of Princeton, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at his home. Born October 18, 1931 at Matoaka, he was the son of the late Roy Richards and Belle Calfee Richards.
Mr. Richards was a self-employed service station mechanic at Richards’ Shell Station in Princeton for more than 20 years. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving four years in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Shawnee Baptist Church where he served as choir director, deacon and Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed the outdoors including fishing and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Richards, Frank Richards and infant brother, Howard; and one sister, Beulah Allen.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Maxine Wiley Richards; two sisters, Helen Testino of Winston-Salem, NC and Nancy Anthony of Princeton; six nieces; and six nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 3, 3009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. Ron Richards and Ralph Calfee officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military rites will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

MATOAKA – Roscoe Lee Jones, 79, of Matoaka, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at Lashmeet. Born February 9, 1930 at Rocky Gap, he was the son of the late Floyd Jones and Matilda Jones.
Mr. Jones had worked for Blankenship Brothers of Matoaka. He served in the National Guard during the Korean Conflict and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his foster parents, Leslie Tutor Burton and Ora Nell Laxton Burton; one daughter, Tracey Kay Jones; two brothers, Charles Jones and Glen Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Joann Gillespie Jones of the home; one son, Harlon Jones and his wife Vanessa of Lashmeet; one daughter, Stacey Ann Jones of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Anna Mae and Evelyn; three grandsons, John Taylor, Jr. of Lashmeet, Harlon “Jamie” Jones and his wife Sarah of Princeton and Cody Eddins of Jacksonville, FL; two granddaughters, Michelle Dillon and her husband Richard of Princeton and Amber Rye of Matoaka; and one great-granddaughter, Miranda Lusk of Cheesy Creek.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Earl Hill officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Lena Belle Jones

LAKE SHAWNEE - Lena Belle Hout Jones, 97, of Lake Shawnee, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at her home following a lengthy illness. Born April 4, 1912 at Lovington, IL, she was the daughter of the late William Sherman and Melissa Bright Hout.
Ms. Jones was a past member of First Baptist Church in Lovington, IL and a current member of Rich Creek Baptist Church in Spanishburg. She was a member of Royal Neighbors and Women’s American Legion. Lena Belle moved to West Virginia in 1995 to be near her daughter.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Raymond R. Jones; five brothers, Amos, Irving, Wesley Carl, Winifred (Fred), Otto; seven sisters, Lelia Zears, Elsia, Carrie Trader, Mary, Flora French, Pauline Conley and Corinne Howard; and one grandson, Daniel L. Jones.
Survivors include two sons, George W. Jones and his wife Nancy of Wichita, KS and L. Dale Jones and his wife Sharon of Lovington, IL; one daughter, Charlotte M. Calfee and her husband Rev. Ralph D. Calfee of Lake Shawnee; seven grandchildren, Russell Calfee and his wife Diahn, Richard Calfee and his wife Freda, Carolyn Worley and her husband Kevin, David Jones and his wife Mary, John Jones and his wife Denise, Gwendolyn Whittit and her husband James and Susan Sanders and her husband Gary; one step-granddaughter, Susan Herrman; twelve great-grandchildren, Eric Jones and his wife Dana, Daryl Calfee and his wife Johanna, Aaron Calfee and his wife Tonya, Joel Calfee, Ryan Whittit, Curtis Whittit, Melanie Whittit, Staci Calfee, Zachary Worley, Zayne Worley, Dalton Sanders and Savanna Sanders; five step great-grandchildren, Jason Smith and his wife Debbie, Jason White and his wife Julie, Julie White, Cole Herman, and Ryan Herman; and two great, great-grandchildren, Derek Jones and Carter Calfee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 25 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Ralph Calfee officiating. Graveside rites and interment will follow in the Keller Cemetery in Lovington, IL.

LERONA – Bernard A. “Sonny” Thomas, Jr., 60, of Lerona, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at his home. Born October 17, 1948 at Princeton, he was the son of Estelle Harrison Kirk of Maryland and the late Bernard A. Thomas, Sr.
Mr. Thomas was retired from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers where he was a master electrician. He was a member of Local 26. He was of the Baptist faith. He loved the outdoors and deer hunting. He was also a good mechanic.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Nathan Thomas and Mae Hare Thomas; and his maternal grandparents, Gladys Burgess and Luther Harrison, Sr.
In addition to his mother, survivors include one son, Bernard “Allen” Thomas, III of Lerona; one granddaughter, Alexis Jamie Marshall of Luray, VA; four sisters, Bernardine C. Shampo of Princeton, Sharon Elaine Browne of Maryland, Deborah Igal and her husband Sam of Bowie, MD and Paula Sowers and her husband Gary of Riverdale, MD; one uncle, Bill Thomas of Princeton; one aunt, Margie Wimmer of Princeton; five nieces; and eight nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. PRINCETON – Christian “Lacy” Tedder, 42, of Princeton, went home to be with his father on Sunday, June 21, 2009 in Roanoke, VA. Born April 21, 1967 at Baltimore, MD, he was the son of Norma Cox Hicks of Archer, FL and the late Hubert Eugene “Ted” Tedder.
Mr. Tedder was a carpenter for Compton Construction Company in Princeton. He was of the Pentecostal faith. He loved old cars and spending time with his sons.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Melissa Tedder; one son, Joshua “Josh” Tedder of the home; step-son, Justin Childs of the home; four brothers, William D. Tedder and Dana Tedder both of Princeton, Roy Tedder of Salisbury, MD and Joel Tedder and his wife Beverly of Bowie, MD; two sisters, Darlene R. Tedder of Rawlings, MD and Cheryl Lee Tedder of Alexandria, VA; one special niece, Angela Thomas; and one special great-niece, Breanna Lynn.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. The body has been cremated.

Roger Childers
June 21, 2009
PRINCETON – Roger Childers, 62, of Princeton, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21, 2009, surrounded by his family and friends, at Beckley Veterans Medical Center in Beckley. Born November 15, 1946 at Beckley, he was the son of the late Bernard Childers and Louise Fleshman Childers.
Roger was a 1966 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley and attended Bluefield State College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Princeton for 30 years where he served as a deacon, R.A. Director, usher, drove the church van and served on many committees including the property and personnel committees. Roger was an employee of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph for 17 years and was an independent insurance agent. He retired from Harry’s Mobile Homes. In his spare time he enjoyed playing golf and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Childers and Wayne Childers.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Freda Pilkington Childers; one son, Robert Charles Childers of Princeton; one daughter, Marsha Comer and her husband Shawn of Princeton; four grandchildren, Robert Charles Childers, Jr., Channing Austen Childers, Madison Haley Comer and Clayton Shawn Comer all of Princeton; two brothers, Jerry Childers and his wife Phyllis of Princeton and Steven Childers and his wife Wanda of Huntington; one sister, Libby Masters and her husband Bob of Frankford; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the First Baptist Church, 1116 Mercer Street, Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Marine Corp League, Det. 957. Honoring Roger’s request, the body has been cremated.

PRINCETON- Taze Andrew Bennett, 76, of Princeton, formerly of Route 1, Matoaka died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at Pine Lodge in Beckley following a long illness. Born February 13, 1933 at Lamar, he was the son of the late Mack Bennett and Nora Tilley Bennett.
Mr. Bennett was a retired appliance repairman. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a fan of NASCAR Racing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Bennett; and two sisters, Annie Cottle and June Lafferty.

Edythe Irene Johnston

PRINCETON- Edythe Irene Johnston, 101, of Princeton, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the Maples in Bluefield. Born February 14, 1908 in Bluefield, she was the daughter of the late James E. Williams and Lucy A. Hicks Williams. She was the oldest of 10 children and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Johnston grew up on a farm her father owned on Bluefield-Princeton Road. She attended Ceres School and Beaver High School. She was a charter member of Greenview United Methodist Church with 82 years service where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was active in several lodges and women’s groups. She retired from Bluefield Telephone Company and had previously worked for Montgomery Ward and the Gold Craft Studio where she painted picture portraits. She loved to travel and play board games with her family. She loved her children and grandchildren and was very blessed in her lifetime. She had many friends and the staff at The Maples Healthcare took very good care of her in her later years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles W. Johnson; her second husband, David Johnston; one daughter, Frances Webster; one son, Charles Wayne Johnson; one grandson Steve Johnson; one son-in-law Roy W. Saunders; six brothers, Cecil Williams, Cleo Williams, Emmet Williams, Glen Williams, Bill Williams and Ray Williams; and three sisters, Virginia Dudley, Louise Wall and Betty Rogers.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Saunders of Lynn, MA; one grandchild Michael Webster and his wife Joyce of Princeton; four great grandchildren, Aaron Webster, Adrienne Webster, Stacy Johnson and Stephanie Johnson; one daughter-in-law, Phyllis Ratliff of Richmond, VA; one son-in-law, Henry W. Webster of Sarasota, FL; one grand daughter-in-law Janet Johnson Stowers; and several nieces and nephews.

PRINCETON- Betty J. Archer, 58, of Princeton, died Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born December 4, 1950 in McDowell, she was the daughter of the late Elbert Powell and Pearl Lydia Conn Powell.
Mrs. Archer was a member of the McDowell Methodist Church and was a former employee of Wal Mart in Bluefield, VA. She enjoyed quilting.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lydia Young; and a brother, Art C. Powell.
Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Allen Archer; one son, Allen Archer, Jr. of the home; one sister, Ruth C. Trull of Yelm, WA; five brothers, Tommy Powell and his wife Juanita of Fayetteville, NC, Harold Powell and his wife Linda of Charleston, Bobby Powell and his wife Carol of Falls Mills, VA, Charles Powell of Bluefield and Jimmy Powell and his wife Elizabeth of Gaithersburg, MD.
Honoring Mrs. Powell’s request, the body has been cremated. There will be no services at the funeral home.

SPANISHBURG – Martha Harvey Goings, 74, of Spanishburg, died Saturday, May 30, 2009 at London, KY. Born April 23, 1935 at Hiawatha, she was the daughter of the late William Harvey and Gertrue Shaw Harvey.
Mrs. Goings was a retired school teacher from Spanishburg Elementary School, Montcalm, Bramwell and Camp Creek. She was a joyful member of Burke Memorial Baptist Church in Princeton for 40 years where she was known as “The Missions Lady.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Damon Dee Goings; one son, Bruce Justin Goings; two brothers, Gilmer Harvey and Denzel Harvey; and three sisters, Ruth Powell, Virginia Hoskins and Pauline Phillips.
Survivors include one son, Raymond Lee Goings and his wife Kathy of Foster; one grandson, Steven Cregger and his wife Dana of Princeton; one brother, William Harvey, Jr. and his wife Elitha of Princeton; five sisters, Hazel Bailey of Cape Cod, MA, Samantha Tucker and her husband Jimmy of Ellerby, NC, Roebertha Taylor and her husband Felix of Annville, KY, Dorothy Hodge and her husband Gene of Ellison, VA and Wanda Faidley of Princeton.

PRINCETON – Junior Foster Sanders, 72, of Princeton, died Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born August 14, 1936 at Princeton, he was the son of the late Harvey Sanders and Grace Tincher Grubb.
Mr. Sanders was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He was retired from IPM of Princeton as a machinist and was also a carpenter. He was a member of the First Christian Church at Lindside.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Robert Sanders; two brothers, Jack Sanders and Roy Sanders; and two sisters, Elizabeth Sanders and Violet Lawson.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Rees Sanders of the home; three sons, Darrell Rees and his wife Connie, Gary Sanders and his wife Linnea and Brian Sanders all of Princeton; two daughters, Phyllis Naidene Shroyer and her husband Robert of Geneva, NB and Marie Stanley and her husband Kenneth of Princeton; two sisters, Elsie Roberts and her husband Keith of Lindside and Lorraine Huffman and her husband Rev. PRINCETON – Joe J. Farmer, 78, of Princeton, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born January 15, 1931 at Matoaka, he was the son of the late Oakley K. Farmer and Viola K. Clemson Farmer.
Mr. Farmer was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from the Mercer County Board of Education as a bus operator. He was a loving father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donnie Farmer and Tommy Farmer; and one sister, Elizabeth Jones.

LASHMEET – Ada Walker Shrewsbury Lovell, four days shy of her 103rd birthday, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Sandy’s Home Sweet Home in Lashmeet following a brief illness. Born May 30, 1906 in Pinoak, she was the daughter of the late Emerson C. and Brada Cook Walker.
She joined the Rich Creek Primitive Baptist Church in September 1955 and was the oldest member of the congregation. In 1930, she became a charter member of the Pinoak C.E.O.S., formerly the Farm Women’s Club. She lived in her own home until she was almost 103 years old with the help of her two devoted and loving caregivers, Marion and Becky Matthews. In her last days, she received the best of care at Sandy’s Home Sweet Home in Lashmeet. Her hobbies included tending to her many flowers, crocheting, reading, word puzzles and visiting with her many friends and relatives. She loved traveling across the United States with her sisters. Being a devout democrat, she voted in every election until the age of 98. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 33 years, Wiley Shrewsbury and her second husband, Elder Earl Lovell; one daughter, Wilma Kilby; an infant son, Bernard Shrewsbury; two sisters, Leafie Bailey and Gladys Vaughan; four brothers, Guy Walker, Wilbur Walker, Chalmer Walker and Wilford Walker.
Survivors include two sons, Clayton Shrewsbury and his wife Pencie of Jamestown, NC and Gale Shrewsbury and his wife Rhona of Lashmeet; five grandchildren, Brian Shrewsbury and his wife Michelle, Dawn Shrewsbury, Ronald Shrewsbury, Laura Jones and her husband David Jones and Curtis Kilby; twelve great-grandchildren; eight great, great-grandhchildren; and several special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Norman Mills and Rev. David Damewood officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton.
Serving as pallbearers will be Brian Shrewsbury, Curtis Kilby, Norman Blankenship, Joel Blankenship, James Grubb, Jim Bevins, Harold Walker, Ed Sanders and Greg Willard.

HIAWATHA – Flossie M. Billings, 73, of Hiawatha, died Friday, May 22, 2009 in Cana, VA. Born June 7, 1935 at Weyanoke, she was the daughter of the late William and Ivory Taylor Gross.
Mrs. Billings was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, crocheting and canning.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ward Billings in 2003; five sisters, Sadie Elliot, Dorothy Hall, Florence Weise, Elsie Billings and Pearl Bell; and one brother, Jimmy Gross.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Pelkey and her husband Richard of Cana, VA and Shirley Patton and her husband Mark of Princeton; three sons, Ward Wiley “Rusty” Billings, Jr. and his wife Brenda of Hiawatha, Timmy Billings and his wife Patty of Hiawatha and Ricky Billings and his wife Rhonda of Lake Bottom; one sister, Erma Smith of Princeton; three brothers, Fred Gross and his wife Betty of Matoaka, Charlie Gross and his wife Lorene of Hiawatha and Willie Gross and his wife Mary of Hiawatha; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and her special pets, Coke, Sadie, Maggie and Dickie.

PRINCETON – Lucille Tabor, 92, of Princeton, died Friday, May 22, 2009 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born April 4, 1917 at Sandlick, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Tabor and Sara Catherine Childress Tabor.
Mrs. Tabor was a member of the Assembly of God in Princeton. She was a supervisor in the shipping department at Hill’s Dept. Store in Green Valley for 10 years before her retirement. She was a seamstress and enjoyed quilting, embroidering and gardening.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Tabor; one son, Joel Tabor; three sisters, Cleo Jones, Bernice Pitzer and Beulah Watkins; and one brother, Herman Tabor.
Survivors include two sons, Gene H. Shrader of Bluefield and James W. Akers of Princeton; one daughter, Annalee Shrader of Princeton; one sister, Maybell Harvey of Minneapolis, MN, formerly of Princeton; and one brother, Thomas J. Tabor of Princeton. Also left to cherish her memory are 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great, great-grandchildren.

Walter Fletcher, Sr.

PRINCETON – Walter V. Fletcher, Sr., 87, formerly of Princeton Towers, Princeton, and Georgia, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at Heartland of Beckley. Born September 8, 1921 at Lennox, GA, he was the son of the late Walter Lee Fletcher and Katie Lou James Fletcher.
Mr. Fletcher was a member of Concord Primitive Baptist Church in Sparks, Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army until 1947. He was an insurance agent in Georgia until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Marcia Lynn Fletcher; two brothers, Bobby Earl Fletcher and Roy Fletcher; and one sister, Bertha Joines.
Survivors include two sons, Victor Fletcher and his wife Lorraine of Beaver and Norman Fletcher and his wife Alice of Lashmeet; one daughter, Teresa Brown and her husband Chuck of Lashmeet; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
There will be no services at the funeral home. The body has been cremated. Interment will take place in Georgia at a later date.

PRINCETON - Ruby Jessaline DeLuca, 85, of Princeton, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 at Charleston General Hospital. Born June 28, 1923 in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late O. L. and Dora Rorrer Wolfe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony DeLuca; one son, Victor DeLuca; one brother, Clyde Wolfe; and one sister, Dorothy Furrow.
Survivors include one son, Roger DeLuca and his wife Shirley of Cape Coral, FL; one daughter, Tammy DeLuca of the home; one granddaughter, Kelly Purdin and her husband Larry; two great grandchildren, Jessica and Wyatt Purdin of Morana, AZ; one brother, Bill Wolfe of Mullens; four sisters, Helen Halsey and Janice Harmon both of Princeton, Kathleen Copen of Taylor, MI and Mary Estes of Basin; and many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her very much.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Willowbrook Baptist Church, 118 Willowbrook Road, Princeton, with the Rev. Emory Marchant officiating. The body has been cremated.

PRINCETON – Arlie Guy “Gus” Farmer, 46, of Black Oak Mountain, Princeton, went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at his home. Born April 13, 1963 at Princeton, he was the son of Della Mary McKinney Farmer of the home and the late Emery Guy Farmer.
Mr. Farmer was a member of the Princeton Praise and Worship Center where he served as a deacon. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and West Virginia football. He was a very outgoing person and never met a stranger.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Delilah June Farmer; and one brother, Harley Calvin Farmer.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by eight sisters, Phyllis Joann Masters Martin of Princeton, Lilly Louanna Russell and her husband Bob of North East, PA, Alice Yvonne Mathena and her husband Dale of Princeton, Peggy Astor Sanders of Rock, Mamie Marlene Underwood and her husband Beverly of Princeton, Tammy Kay Farmer Crigger and her husband Jim of Montcalm, Mary Jane Mitchem and her husband Bob of Princeton and Pamela Gay Farmer of Athens; and his cousins, the Lewis family of Princeton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Rowland H. PRINCETON – Kenneth Higginbotham, 70, of Princeton, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Lincolnton, NC. Born August 24, 1938 at Princeton, he was the son of the late Grady Higginbotham and Alta Clark Higginbotham.
Mr. Higginbotham served 23 years in the U.S. Army, including in Korea and Vietnam, before retiring in 1978. He received many medals and campaign ribbons. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed gardening and cooking.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann Basham Higginbotham in 2005; one brother, David Clark Higginbotham; and one granddaughter, Natasha Higginbotham.
Survivors include one son, David Higginbotham of Bear, DE; two daughters, Beth Weekley and her husband Gary of Lincolnton, NC and Michelle Pate and her husband Travis of Gastonia, NC; one brother, Robert Higginbotham and his wife of Princeton; one sister, Sheila Hearn of Princeton; six grandchildren, Ashley Weekley, Stacy Weekley, Sara Higginbotham, Jordan Higginbotham, Alyssa Pate and Noah Pate; and one great-granddaughter, Isabella Gullion.

KEGLEY – Maymie L. Bridges, 87, of Kegley, died Monday, May 11, 2009 at her home. Born January 23, 1922 at Lake Shawnee, she was the daughter of the late Howe Blankenship and Alma Walker Blankenship.
Mrs. Bridges was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a former employee of Maidenform in Princeton. She enjoyed reading, embroidering and cooking.

LASHMEET – Katherine Gay Shrewsbury, 66, of Reese Harmon Ridge, Lashmeet, died Monday, May 11, 2009 at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. Born February 9, 1943 at Herndon, she was the daughter of the late Opie McKinney and Vircie Mae Sink McKinney.
Mrs. Shrewsbury had worked for the Wyoming County Board of Education. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed going to Smith Mountain Lake. She was a dedicated wife of 48 years and was a loving mother who enjoyed and loved her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Christine Preston.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Curtis Shrewsbury of the home; one daughter, Renee Shrewsbury of MacArthur; one sister, Verleen Raye of Bud; and two brothers, Willard McKinney of Lashmeet and Charles McKinney of New Mexico.

Mrs. Inge was a resident of Roanoke for 15 years. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Princeton. She was the owner and operator of Tresa’s Beauty Shop in Princeton for 20 years. She loved her church and her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Max Webb; her second husband, Aubry “Junior” Inge; and her son, Richard “Kookie” Webb.
Survivors include one daughter, Becky Richards of Roanoke, VA; five grandchildren, Max Webb, John King and his wife Camille, Barbara Fuqua, Lawson Webb and Jordan Webb; one great-granddaughter, Reagan King; and one sister, Betty Goode of Roanoke, VA.

Mr. Howell was a veteran of the US Army. He was retired from Pocahontas Welding Supply in Bluefield. He was of the Baptist faith. He played the mandolin and enjoyed bluegrass music.
Survivors include two brothers, Charles Howell and his wife Betty of Princeton and Freddie Howell and his wife Nancy of Kegley; and one sister, Edna Mae Martin of Princeton.

SANDLICK – Jason Dwight Bowling, 35, of Sandlick, died Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born January 26, 1974 in Princeton, he was the son of Douglas Bowling and the late Lylia M. Scott Bowling.
Mr. Bowling was a 1992 graduate of Matoaka High School and a 1999 graduate of Bluefield State College with a B.S.degree in Business and Marketing. He was the owner and operator of Blue Ridge Lawn and Garden in Princeton and was an employee of Brogan’s Longshot in Athens. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and gardening.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Emmett Bowling; and his maternal grandfather, James Scott.
In addition to his father, survivors include his step-mother, Kay Martin Bowling of Princeton; his paternal grandmother, Bernice Bowling of Matoaka; his maternal grandmother, Imogene Scott of Sandlick; one brother, Douglas Scott Bowling of Lashmeet; one sister, Lori Anne Thornton and her husband Steven Lee of Lashmeet; one step-brother, Martie Walker of Bluefield; one step-sister, Angela Walker of California; two nephews, Taylor Bowling and Tanner Bowling both of Lashmeet; and two nieces, Kelsey Thornton and Amber Thornton both of Lashmeet.

PRINCETON - Johnny W. Copen, 60, of 651 Glenwood Haven Road, Princeton, died Friday, May 1, 2009 at his home. Born June 8, 1948 in Princeton, he was the son of the late Marion Copen and Beulah Farmer Copen Dennis.
Mr. Copen worked at Flip of Coin operated by Res Care of Princeton. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Eugene Copen; and his step-father, Edwin “Pee Wee” Dennis.
Survivors include one brother, Ronald “J.D.” Copen of Princeton; two sisters, Mariam Mae Farmer of Lake Bottom and Felicia Phillips of Roanoke, VA; special friend, Hattie Dillon of Princeton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor L. A. Farmer officiating. Following the service the body will be cremated.

Duel Manville Sigmon
April 29, 2009
PRINCETON - Duel Manville Sigmon, 78, of Princeton, formerly of Matoaka, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 in Roanoke, VA. Born May 6, 1930 in Princeton, he was the son of the late Nelson Sigmon and Brookie Meadows Sigmon Smith.
Mr. Sigmon was a veteran of the US Air Force. He was retired from Better Homes in Bluefield after 30 years of service, and then worked at Wal-Mart in Bluefield, Virginia for 17 years. He was a fan of West Virginia football and basketball.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carnedith Sigmon and two infant brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Cordell Sigmon; one son, Duel Manville Sigmon, Jr. and his wife Alice of Roanoke, VA; one daughter, Debbie Griffith and her husband Mark of Stephens City, VA; one grandson, Caleb Andrew Sigmon of Roanoke, VA; one sister, Pauline Pruett and her husband Bob of Covington, VA; and special friends and neighbors, Becky and John Hundley of Princeton.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Family and friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton at 12:45 p.m. There will be no visitation or service at the funeral home.

Wade White
April 24, 2009
PRINCETON – Wade White, 65, of Princeton, died Friday, April 24, 2009 at his home. Born February 21, 1944 at Princeton, he was the son of Lura White Elmore of Princeton and the late William Frazier.
Wade attended the Pentecostal Revival Center in Princeton. He served in the Army National Guard for 31 years and had the rank of Sergeant E5 at his retirement in 2004. He was a former employee of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Plant in Princeton, Roller Floral and last worked at Princeton Floral. Wade was kind and caring, known and loved by many and was a friend to all. He enjoyed his National Guard friends and talking on his CB radio.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Thompson White; his step-father, Ben H. Elmore; and his grandmother, Elsie White.
In addition to his mother, survivors include one daughter, Sherry Thompson and her husband Benny of Princeton; and one grandson, Heath Thompson of Princeton; one step-grandson, Eric Thompson and his wife Melanie of Princeton; one step-brother, Jim Elmore and his wife Jan of Charlottesville, VA; five aunts, Wanda Quesenberry and her husband Drake of Erie, PA, Dora Coburn of Coolridge, Hattie Woods and Edna Quesenberry both of Princeton and Mary Chappell of Middletown, DE; one uncle, Jack White of Bluefield; and his little dog, Daisy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Princeton where military honors will be conducted by the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veterans Council. Friends will serve as pallbearers.

LAKE SHAWNEE - Lloyd Ellis Alger, Sr., 87, of Lake Shawnee, went home to be with the Lord Friday, April 24, 2009 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born January 30, 1922 at Madison, VA, he was the son of the late Henry and Ollie Alger.
He was a Christian and a member of Fairview Christian Community Church in Princeton. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in World War II. He retired from the Naval shipyard in South Carolina after 35 years service then he worked for the Summerville, South Carolina school district for 10 years. He was a former scout master and his hobbies were woodworking and bowling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Alger; one daughter, Peggy Mason; 2 grandchildren; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his loving wife, Lora Janette Neely Alger of Lake Shawnee; three children, Terry O’Dell Alger, Daniel B. Alger and Elizabeth Alger Coker all of Summerville, SC; three step-children, Rex Neely of Princeton, Norma Meadows of Hinton and Mary Wellman of Kegley; four brothers, Paul Alger of Corpus Christi, TX, Roland (Buddy) Alger of Princeton, John H. Alger of Charles Town and James Alger of Winchester, VA; two sisters, Bessie Yowell of Maryland and Nancy Alger of Charles Town; 26 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Interment will be at Summerville Cemetery in Summerville, SC.

MATOAKA – Madeline Shrewsbury, 90, of Matoaka, died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at her home. Born October 29, 1918 at Macajah Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Mark Graham and Fronie Rebecca Corm Graham.
Mrs. Shrewsbury was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed gardening. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hope Shrewsbury, Sr. in 1976; three brothers, Stacy Graham, Phillip Graham and Drewey Graham; four sisters, Anna Shrewsbury, Pauline Wyatt, twin sister, Maxine Glover and Auline Hubbard; and two grandchildren, Austin Wyatt Akers and Katherine Rielly Wallace.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne Shrewsbury and his wife Janice of Garwood, Ace Shrewsbury and his wife Brenda of Spanishburg and Hope Shrewsbury, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Matoaka; two daughters, Patty Akers and her husband Shelby of Lashmeet and Pam Carter and her husband Mark of Herndon; 17 grandchildren, including special grandson, Jason Mack, 22 great-grandchildren; and two great, great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Carlyle Blomme, Rev. Larry Cecil and Arnold Akers officiating. Interment will follow at the Graham Cemetery, Rt. 1, Matoaka. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

BLUEFIELD – J. Y. Koontz Bailey, 88, of Bluefield, formerly of Princeton Avenue, Princeton, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at his home. Born June 4, 1920 in Giatto, he was the son of the late Everett Bailey and Minnie Koontz Bailey.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by several cousins.
It was his request to have no funeral service. His body was entombed beside his mother and father at Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton.

KEGLEY- Windella Nicholson, 79, of Glenwood Park Retirement Village, formerly of Kegley, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 20, 2009 at Princeton Community Hospital following a long illness. Born December 10, 1929 at Piedmont, she was the daughter of the late Pilgrim and Vennie Wagoner Roberts.
She faithfully attended the Hiawatha Gospel Mission. She was a homemaker and loved to cook and spend time with her family. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano and guitar.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Nicholson in 1998; one sister, Della June Worrell; one brother, Otey Roberts; and one great grandson.
Survivors include four daughters, Loretta Mae Sheridan and her husband Fred of Pine Bluff, AR, Shirley Jean Green and her husband Donald of Kegley, Della Marie Brewster and her husband Roger of Bland, VA and Tina Suzette Cales and her husband Gregory of Speedway; two sons, Richard P. Nicholson and his wife June of Matoaka and Clifton Wayne Nicholson and his wife Cathy Lee of Chapmanville; four sisters, Ella Mae Worrell and her husband Larry of Newport News, VA, Cora Bandy of Salem, VA, Frances Bolton and her husband Jim of Princeton and Mary Ann Fowler and her husband David of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; three brothers, Edward Roberts and his wife Joan of Trinity, NC, Gilmore Roberts of North Wilkesboro, NC and Bonnie Roberts and Melva of Princeton; fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Hiawatha Gospel Mission in Hiawatha with the Rev. Roger Walker officiating. Interment will follow at the Matoaka Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
