Juanita E. Miller
January 4, 2009

COVEL - Juanita E. Miller, 79, of Covel, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley. Born July 15, 1929 at Crane Creek, she was the daughter of the late William C. Dotson and Nellie Mae Teasley Dotson.

Mrs. Miller had been a resident of Covel since 1957 and was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church of God at Bud-Alpoca. She was a caregiver and last employed by the Council on Aging in Itmann and was a member of TOPS. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Sidney Harold Smith, Samuel Montrosse and Roscoe Miller; one son, Stephen Bruce Smith; one sister, Helen Kelly; four brothers, Columbus Dotson, Paul Dotson, Henry Dotson and Joseph Austin and her step-mother, Hattie Blevins.

Survivors include three sons, Sidney D. Smith and his wife Karen of Lester, Roger D. Smith and his wife Tina of Covel and Calvin Smith and his wife Jill of Prosperity; one daughter, Charlotte Hughes and her husband Jimmy of Knotts Island, NC; six step-children, Samuel D. Montrosse, Jr. and his wife Betty of North Carolina, Margaret Light and her husband Junior of Itmann, Annie Jo Bowden of Matoaka, Rodney D. Miller and his wife Margie of North Carolina, Roscoe D. Miller of North Carolina and Elizabeth Miller of Whitesville; 13 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; several brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and one special niece, Mae Green and her husband Allen of Florida.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Carl Ray Underwood, officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

James Wiblin
December 28, 2008

ROCK - James B. Wiblin, Jr., 86, of Rock, died Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born July 11, 1922 in Jackson County, he was the son of the late James B. Wiblin, Sr. and Carrie E. Parson Wiblin.

Mr. Wiblin was a charter member of Beeson Chapel where he was one of the founders. He served as a Deacon for 56 years, a trustee, treasurer and taught Sunday School. He sang with his two children for many years. He was a retired heavy equipment operator having worked for Preservati Coal Company and was a member of U.M.W.A.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma E. West Wiblin in 1993; three brothers, Don Wiblin, Delbert Wiblin and Dean Wiblin; and one step-son, Carter Kinzer.

Survivors include his wife, Viola G. Shrewsbury Kinzer Wiblin of the home; one son, James W. Wiblin and his wife Janice of Princeton; one daughter, Beatrice Shrewsbury and her husband Donald of Beeson; one brother, Clair Wiblin and his wife Mary of Parkersburg; four step-children, Carolyn Blankenship and her husband Jerry of Princeton, Molly Blankenship and her husband Roger of Princeton, Sallie Beach of Tazewell, VA and Robert Kinzer and companion Connie of Romney; 14 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Bundy Dye, Jeff Shrewsbury and Anthony Shrewsbury, officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Richard Hill
December 24, 2008

LASHMEET – Richard Lane Hill, 62, of Lashmeet, died Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born August 16, 1946 at Bluefield, he was the son of the late T.C. “Tub” Hill and Euva Mae Shrewsbury Hill.

Mr. Hill was of the protestant faith. He was a 1964 graduate of Matoaka High School and a former employee of the WV Dept. of Highways. He was a graduate of Bluefield State College and was a submarine designer at the Newport News Naval Shipyard. He retired from Appalachian Power Company after 36 years of service as a senior engineer technologist. He was also the owner and operator of Hill Mobile Home Park in Lashmeet. He was an outdoorsman and loved feeding wild animals. He enjoyed four-wheeling with his sons and special friend, Dave Taylor. He was a member of the Princeton Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1521 and a former member of the Princeton Elks Lodge. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Melba D. Murphy.

Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Mary Johnston Brown Hill of the home; five children, Zina Terry and her husband Mark of Bluewell, Eddie Brown of Rock, Tammy Lynn Jenkins and her husband Robert of Spanishburg, Richard Hill, Jr. and his wife Christy of Statesville, NC and Gregory Hill and his companion Tina of Lashmeet; 10 grandchildren, Jody, Heather, Tabatha, Alisha, Justin, Barry, Candace, Rocket, Britani and Briana; and three great-grandchildren, John, Jaden and Kayleigh.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Connie Lester officiating. Entombment will follow at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Princeton.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ellis Sult, Bill Gillespie, Larry Wimmer, Mark Terry, Ralph (Peanut) Johnston, Herman (Hotrod) Johnston, Robert Jenkins and Justin Moose.

Ruth Akers
December 21, 2008

PRINCETON – Ruth M. Akers, 84, of Princeton, died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Carillon Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Born September 24, 1924 at Weyanoke, she was the daughter of the late Frank Mack and Mae Short Mack.

Mrs. Akers was a member of the Bailey Memorial Baptist Church at Giatto. She worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio building bombers during World War II. She loved to cook and read the Bible. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Gaythel D. Akers in 2004; three brothers, Carl Short, Paul Mack and Darrell Mack; and one grandson, Wesley Akers.

Survivors include three sons, Larry Akers and his wife Linda and Barry Akers and his wife Molly all of Lashmeet and Randall Akers and his wife Sherri of Princeton; one daughter, Donna Sue Akers Lusk of Tazewell, VA; one brother, Charlie Mack and his wife Mildred of Lashmeet; two sisters, Maryline Bailey of Princeton and Ruby Hodge and her husband Jamie all of Princeton; a daughter-in-law, Natalie Akers of Lashmeet; nine grandchildren, Jeff, Melissa, Rodney, Bradley, Lorie, Deana, Mindy, Aaron and Gaberial; seven great-grandchildren, Noel, Scott, Kayla, Justin, Hannah, Chloe and Isaac; and one great, great-great granddaughter, Chloe Adriana.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Ronnie Thomure officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Lusk, Brad Lusk, Rodney Akers, Aaron Akers, Gaberial Akers and Jason Charchalla.

Carl Shrewsbury
December 20, 2008

PRINCETON - Carl Shrewsbury of 115 Bluejay Court, Quail Valley, Princeton, died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born September 20, 1928 at Arista, he was the son of the late Harry H. Shrewsbury and Cora Alice Monk Shrewsbury.

Mr. Shrewsbury retired from Consolidated Coal Company at Itmann after 38 years of service. He was a member of UMWA and a veteran of the U. S. Army. He enjoyed hunting.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Shrewsbury.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Delois “Tootsie” Hale Shrewsbury; one daughter, Debra Jones of Princeton; one grandson, Allen Jones of Princeton; one brother, Harless Shrewsbury and his wife Sonia of Mullens; and one sister, Alice White and her husband Rance of Lashmeet.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2008 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with the Rev. Jack Sudderth officiating.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

MOORESVILLE, NC – Joyce Ann Akers Bailey, 77, of Mooresville, NC, formerly of Princeton, died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville, NC. Born August 29, 1931 at Hiawatha, she was the daughter of the late Tracy Akers and Roma Webb Akers.

Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Princeton Presbyterian Church and enjoyed reading her Bible. She was proud to have been a military wife for 24 years and still was concerned about veterans. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Leland Tracy Akers.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Robert J. Bailey of the home; three children, Pamela Watson of Charleston, SC, Jaclyn Ann Meadows and her husband Joe of Princeton and Mark Robert Bailey of the home; four grandchildren, Teresa Bailey and Barbara Thornsberry both of Charleston, SC and Macayla Ann Copeland and Bretta Nicole Copeland both of Princeton; and five great-grandchildren, Tracy, Heaven, Patrick, Dakota, Sierra all of Charleston, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 18, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Edwin Pettus officiating. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley. Men of the church will serve as pallbearers.

Edith Jewell Kessinger
December 12, 2008

PRINCETON – Edith Jewell Kessinger, 74, of Princeton Health Care Center, formerly of Honaker Avenue, Princeton, died Friday, December 12, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born November 29, 1934 at Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Pearl W. Kessinger and Minnie DeHart Kessinger.

Miss Kessinger attended First Baptist Church in Princeton and was a member of the LIFE Sunday school class. After graduating from Princeton High School, she served as a caregiver to several family members and friends. She enjoyed living at Princeton Health Care Center because she could continue caring for others. She was an expert seamstress and altered clothing for both the Lynch and Stag clothing companies. She loved her dogs and was an avid jigsaw puzzle worker, and one of her framed puzzles is hanging in the dining room at Princeton Health Care Center. Jewel spent her entire life caring for others and she was appropriately named because she was indeed a jewel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ervin Kessinger, Boyd Kessinger and Fred Kessinger; and two sisters, Pearl “Tootie” Hall and Dorothy Jean Smith.

Survivors include one brother, Ted Kessinger of Princeton; and one sister, Kathryn Showalter of Princeton.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2008 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Friends and family attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton at 12:45 p.m. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Charlie Hamm
December 12, 2008

LASHMEET - Charlie E. Hamm, 89, of Lashmeet, died Friday, December 12, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born June 8, 1919 at Giatto, he was the son of the late Ted Hamm and Betty Bear Hamm.

Mr. Hamm was a member of the Ridgeview Church of God at Lashmeet and was one of the founders of the church. He was a man who loved God, his family and his country. He served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a retired coal miner, having worked at Itmann and was a member of U.M.W.A.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nannie C. Sheets Hamm of the home; two daughters, Charlotte Cramer of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and Dr. Shelby Taylor and her husband Dr. Joseph Rentz of Knoxville, TN; four grandchildren, Russell Cramer, Kevin Hurst, Keith Mellard and Lisa Rubalcava; one great grandson, Ryan Hurst; four brothers, Herbert Hamm of Lake Shawnee, Donald Hamm of Princeton, Glen Hamm and his wife Bernice of Lashmeet and Bill Hamm of Spanishburg; three sisters, Betty Colobro of Princeton, Nora Campbell of Hampton, VA and Bernice Schrette of Norristown, PA.

Ronald Bragg
December 5, 2008

BLUEFIELD – Ronald Lee Bragg, 51, of Arbor Ridge Dr., Bluefield, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, December 05, 2008 at his home. Born December 1, 1957 in Bluefield, he was the son of Mary Bailey Kelly of Bluefield and the late Fred V. Bragg.

Mr. Bragg last worked as a cargo loader at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, IL. He was a member of the Ceres Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors including hunting, fishing and camping.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jimmy and Goldie White Bragg; and his maternal grandparents, T.K. and Mary Dowdy Bailey.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his step-father, Jerry Kelly of Bluefield; one sister, Debra Ann Billen and her husband Dan of Harpersville, AL; one niece, Cheryl Livingston and her husband Jeremy; and two nephews, Joshua Chambers and Greg Chambers.

A memorial service will be conducted Monday, December 8, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastors James Mooney and Patrick Wheeler officiating.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home by 10:45 a.m.

Craig Peterson
December 2, 2008

PRINCETON - Craig Stewart Peterson, 56, of Princeton, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. Born February 20, 1952 in Provo, UT, he was the son of Anna Louise Stewart Peterson of Greensboro, NC and the late Dr. Abel John Evans Peterson.

Craig was a 1970 graduate of Princeton High School. He was a very talented musician and enjoyed playing the piano, organ and drums. He was a salesman for Blizzard Industrial Supply Company in Bluefield for 31 years. As a young teenager he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at the First Baptist Church in Princeton. He was chosen as “Class Comedian” in high school and had a hilarious sense of humor. Craig was passionate about West Virginia University’s football team. His second passion was his love and compassion for animals. He was always rescuing stray animals and loving them. He is dearly loved by his family and friends. He was a kind and generous soul who delighted in making others laugh and feel loved in his own unique style. Everyone who knew Craig Peterson loved him.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one great niece, Catherine Ann Lemasters.

In addition to his mother, survivors include two sisters, Charlene Joy Peterson Snodgrass of Stevensville, MT and Melanie Peterson Aliff of Greensboro, NC; two brothers, John Christopher Peterson of Abingdon, VA and Abel John Peterson, II of Los Angeles, CA; five nieces; two nephews; 5 great nieces; and 4 great nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with eulogists Bobby Hanes and James H. Aliff. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home.

Paul Tilley

LENOIR, NC – Paul A. Tilley, 41, of Lenoir, NC, formerly of Lashmeet, died Monday, December 1, 2008 at Carilion Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Born December 14, 1966 at Bluefield, he was the son of the late James Warren Tilley and Barbara June Huffman Tilley.

Mr. Tilley last worked at a furniture factory in North Carolina.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Randall Tilley, Rodney Tilley and Johnny Tilley.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth A. Bailey Tilley of the home; four children, Brittany A. Tilley, Christopher A. Tilley, Kendall I. Tilley and Cailyn A. Tilley all of Lenoir, NC; five sisters, Linda Smith of Lenoir, NC, Janice Fuller of Princeton, Ethel Mae Blevins of Pineville, June Rose of Kegley and Sharon Smith of Lashmeet; and six brothers, Ray Tilley and William Tilley both of Lenoir, NC, Gerald Tilley and Steven Tilley both of Oregon, Gary Tilley of Washington and Doug Tilley of Florida.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Randolph Dishner officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.

Ethel Sawyers
November 30, 2008

MATOAKA – Ethel A. Sawyers, 100, of Matoaka, died Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Princeton Health Care Center where she had been a resident for two years. Born May 16, 1908 at Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late William Rufus Wright and Amber City Branscome Wright.

Mrs. Sawyers was a member of First Church of God in Matoaka for 82 years. She was a former cook at Matoaka Elementary School. She enjoyed singing and reading her Bible in her spare time. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl H. Sawyers in 1954; two sisters, Rosa Lester and Hattie Stevenson; one granddaughter, Jennifer Meadows; one great-granddaughter, Carla Yost; and one son-in-law, Garfield Walker.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Sawyers Thornton and her husband Walter of Kegley and Dovie Walker of Princeton; seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Roy Williams officiating. Brenda Davis

PRINCETON – Brenda “Bootie” Arbutas Davis, 67, of Princeton, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton following a long illness. Born March 12, 1941 at Peterstown she was the daughter of the late Luther Gillespie and Sylvia McGuire Gillespie.

Mrs. Davis was an active member of Johnston Chapel Baptist Church in Princeton for 38 years. She was a retired employee of Davis-Stewart Group Home in Princeton having worked there for 18 years. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her loving husband of 48 years, Gary Davis of the home; two daughters, Dolly Davis of the home and Sherry Perkins and her husband David of Princeton; one son, Jason Davis and his wife Debbie of Princeton; two grandchildren and the loves of her life, Logan Davis and Holly Blankenship both of Princeton; one sister, Joyce Sorenson and her husband Don of Omaha, NE; and two brothers, Gerald Gillespie and his wife Linda of Princeton and Clayton Gillespie and his wife Judy of Peterstown.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Jimmie Jones, Rev. Jim Simmons and Pastor Terry Lambert officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Starkey, Joey Starkey, Bryan Starkey, Steve Wine, Bradley Davis and Casey Lester.

Carolyn Sue O'Dell
November 14, 2008

KEGLEY – Carolyn Sue O’Dell, 60, of Kegley, left this world peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Friday, November 14, 2008 after a long courageous battle with leukemia. Born March 13, 1948 on Conner Mountain in Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late Benny O’Dell and Betty Bailey O’Dell.

Mrs. O’Dell was a free-spirit and lived her life to the fullest. She enjoyed refinishing antique furniture. She was a homemaker and of the Jehovah Witness faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by an infant son, David Belcher; three brothers, Wayne O’Dell, Louis O’Dell and infant, Ronnie O’Dell; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Jane O’Dell and Peggy O’Dell.

Survivors include one son, Dennie “Dude” Belcher, Jr. and his wife Patrice of Princeton; one daughter, Amanda Belcher of Kegley; three grandchildren, Katelyn, Allyson and David; six brothers, Robert O’Dell and his wife Enoya of Richlands, NC, Charles O’Dell of Riverdale, MD, Everett O’Dell and his wife Carol of Lerona, Curtis O’Dell and Garry O’Dell both of Kegley and Richard O’Dell and his wife Susan of Princeton; three sisters, Garnet Hale and her husband Rick of Kirksel, KY, Janet Heslep of Kegley and Ann Huffman and her husband Lonnie of Kegley; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton. Minister Eddie Wimmer will do the eulogy. Interment will follow at the O’Dell Cemetery at Lamar.

PRINCETON- Ethel Nesbit Burton, 84, of Princeton, formerly of Matoaka died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born October 16, 1924 at Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late Richard Nesbit and Edith Nesbit Shrader.

She was a former employee of Weyanoke Coal & Coke Company at Arista. She was a homemaker and attended Cumberland Heights Baptist Church in Bluefield.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Louie Burton; three sisters, Alice Cook, Virginia Mae Hartwell and Pearl Hedrick.

Survivors include two sons, Richard (Eddie) Burton of Hiawatha and Alan S. Burton of Princeton; four daughters, Janie Fanin of Sandlick, granddaughter, Lisa Burton of Alexandria, VA, who was raised like a daughter, Debra Shatley and husband, Richard of Wilmington, DE, Donna Green and husband, Frank of Spanishburg, Clara Young of Matoaka; four sisters, Evelyn Poff of Bluefield, Pauline Cox of Matoaka, Ellen Elliott and her husband, Emory of Lashmeet and Bessie Miller and her husband, Ronnie of Kegley; one brother, Charlie Nesbit and wife, Pearl of Matoaka; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

CAMP CREEK – Steve Lawson (S.L.) Hubbard, 84, of Camp Creek died Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at his home. Born December 21, 1923 at Camp Creek, he was the son of the late Lewis Edward Hubbard and Eva Dean Williams Hubbard.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was the owner of Hubbard’s Roofing Company in Princeton for more than forty years. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed gardening in his spare time.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Larry Dean Hubbard; two grandchildren, Christopher Lee Hubbard and Adrian Don Hubbard; two brothers, Carl Hubbard and Lewis Hubbard, Jr.; six sisters, Dollie Lilly, Donna Gunter, Dorothy Hubbard, Lora Muse, Beulah Brock and Ruth Witt.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Via and her husband, David of Lerona and Audrey Kountz and her husband, Steven of Nimitz; three sons, Gary W. Hubbard and his wife, Eve of Camp Creek, Kenneth Hubbard and his wife, Amanda of Union, SC and Danny Hubbard of Lake Bottom; four brothers, Arnold Hubbard of Wichita Fall, TX, James Hubbard, Ray Hubbard of Princeton and Ezra Hubbard of Camp Creek; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; caregiver, Ron Fouquet of Camp Creek.

Douglas Davis
November 8, 2008

ROCK – Douglas R. Davis, 65, of Rock, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at a Roanoke, VA hospital. Born October 27, 1943 at Rock, he was the son of the late Willard T. Davis and Gerdie Mae Bailey Davis.

Mr. Davis served in the US Air Foce from 1964-1969. He retired from the US Postal Service in 2002 where he was a rural letter carrier for 28 years. He was a member of the Wright Mountain Baptist Church at Rock where he taught Sunday School and served as Sunday School Superintendent from 1978-2008. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing computer games. He will be greatly missed by his faithful friend and companion, Misty, his beloved dog.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William Lewis Davis, James Urcel Davis and Carl Walton Davis; and one sister, Beryl Snider.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Juanita Barbour Davis; four brothers, Duane Randolph Davis and his wife Rosie of Rock, Charles Evans Davis and his wife Velda of Amelia, VA and Monty Ike Davis and his wife Patricia and Robert Lee (Bob) Davis and his wife Nancy all of Rock; three sisters, Ruth Gearhart, Gail Akers and her husband Harvey and Valory White all of Rock; and many nieces and nephews.

Calvin White
November 5, 2008

PRINCETON – Calvin Ray White, 49, of Brown Street, Princeton, walked away in the arms of our Lord and Savior to claim his new heavenly body on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born October 13, 1959 at Princeton, he was the son of Elsie Pennington McGraw of Princeton and the late Jessie (Warren) White.

Mr. White grew up in Athens and was a 1977 graduate of Athens High School. He worked as a welder for 24 years at the Daniels Company in Bluefield were he was the union steward. He was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church in Kellysville. He loved his God and loved serving him whole heartily. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed by all who knew him and is now in the loving arms of Jesus. Well done good faithful servant.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 16 months, Dora Lafferty White of Princeton; two sons, Christopher White and his wife Anneli of Highspire, PA and Anthony White of Princeton; one daughter, Sarah Jo White of Speedway; two grandchildren, Alyssia and Lillyanna; three brothers, Jack Pennington and his wife Sue of Joplin, MO, Gary White and his wife Diana of Mt. Vernon, IN and Darren White of Cumming, GA; one sister, Nellena Dooley and her husband Scott of Roswell, GA; and many nieces and nephews.

Eugene Wright
November 4, 2008

PRINCETON – Eugene S. Wright, 92, of Princeton, formerly of Lashmeet, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Ridgecare Assisted Living in Princeton. Born November 20, 1915 at Lashmeet, he was the son of the late Daniel Wright and Myrtle Wheeler Wright.

Mr. Wright was a retired coal miner, starting his service in 1935. When he retired he was a superintendent for Wright Coal Co. He also worked for the West Virginia Liquor Commissioner. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze service stars, Arrowhead Bronze Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze service stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Church where he was the oldest member of the church. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Montrosse Wright in 1996; one brother, Okley Wright; and one sister, Gertrude Thompson.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. William Hill and Larry Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military honors will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council and the WV National Guard Honor Guard.

WAR - Patricia Ann Holland, 70, of War, died Monday, November 3, 2008 at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA. Born July 18, 1938 at Excelsior, she was the daughter of the late James Barie and Mary Evans Barie.

Mrs. Holland was a homemaker and a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in War. She was a retired health care worker and liked arts and crafts. She was a loving mother and grandmother and she loved people. She was the founder and director of the Homestead Falconettes, a precision drill team which were comprised of all-girl-military dependents.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann Holland.

Survivors include two sons, David Holland of War and James B. Holland of Columbia, SC; three daughters, Vickie Lynn Frith of Zephyr Hills, FL, Katherine Jane Schmidt of Springhill, FL and Ladonna Ann Kennedy of War; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in War with Pastor Spencer Oxford officiating.

PRINCETON – Robenia R. Hylton Walker, 81, formerly of West Honaker Avenue, Princeton, died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born June 4, 1927 at Gary, she was the daughter of the late Sidney Jack Hylton and Sadie McClanahan Hylton.

Mrs. Walker was a former employee of PikeView High School where she received several plaques in appreciation for her work. She was a member of Kellysville Church of God. She and her late husband, Rev. Darrell Walker, ministered to many rest homes and nursing homes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Darrell Walker in 2003; and two sons, Ronnie Street and Neil Street.

Survivors include nine brothers and sisters, Loray Powell, Ivory Hylton and his wife Peggy, Lorina Fink and her husband Herman, Arvenia Yopp and Arlevia Farley and her husband Don all of Princeton, Willie Hylton of York, PA, Frank Hylton and his wife Pixie of Scottsdale, AZ, Jack Hylton and his wife Cindy of Quakerstown, PA and Darlene Holcomb and her husband Donald of Chatsworth, GA; two granddaughters, Shannon Starkweather of Texas and Melissa Williams and her husband Shane of East Bend, NC; five great-grandchildren, Chastity, Stacy, Joshua, Emma Grace, and Shayna; and several nieces and nephews.

PRINCETON – Evelyn C. Blankenship, 79, of Princeton Health Care Center, Princeton, died Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born May 19, 1929 in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of the late Everett Dyson, Sr. and Toye Phillips Dyson Hatfield.

Mrs. Blankenship was a homemaker and a member of the Oceana Baptist Church in Oceana. She enjoyed gospel music and crocheting. She was happy to have been a resident of Princeton Health Care Center for several years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Kimbel Blankenship in 1982; one brother, Dennis Hatfield; and her step-father, Ellis Hatfield.

Survivors include one daughter, Dolores Mills and her husband Gary of Beeson; one son, Jimmy Blankenship and his wife Jean of Louisa, VA; one brother, Everett Dyson, Jr. and his wife Gracie of Beeson; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

PRINCETON – Soon Ja “Betty” Howerton, 84, of Curry Mobile Home Park, Princeton, died Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. She was born January 18, 1924 at Seoul, South Korea.

Mrs. Howerton was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith. She has lived in the area since 1970.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Bennett L. “Sarge” Howerton of Princeton; one son, Young I. Kim and his wife Ammie of Woodbridge, VA; two grandchildren, Melanie Park of Brentwood, TN and Annie Elliott of Charlottesville, VA; and one great-grandson.

MATOAKA – Clinton Akers, 84, of North Thompson Hill, Matoaka, died Saturday, October 25, 2008 at his home. Born August 30, 1924 at Arista, he was the son of the late Charles William Akers and Florence Justice Akers.

Mr. Akers was a member of the Rich Creek Baptist Church at Spanishburg. He was a disabled miner last working at Turkey Gap for Consol. He was a miner for 60 years and a member of the U.M.W.A. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Walker in 2008; six brothers, Clarence Akers, Otis Akers, Jess Akers, Ray Akers, Roy Akers and Claborne Akers; one half-brother, Murray Cruise; one half-sister, Virginia Cruise; and one grandson, Ray Hall.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Oma W. Mills Akers of the home; three daughters, Brenda Hall and her husband Clifford and Connie Cook and her husband Randall all of Matoaka and Debbie Barbour and her husband John of Mt. Olive; two sons, Clinton Akers, Jr. and his wife Vickie of Princeton and Harold Akers and his wife Kimberly of Pinoak; two sisters, Betty Mills of Beeson and Ruby Combs of Princeton; a son-in-law, Tola Walker of Bluefield; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; and a special friend, Clayton Dollinger of Pembroke, VA.

HERNDON – Betty Grose, 73, of Herndon, died Thursday, October 23, 2008 at her home. Born August 27, 1935 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late William L. Alley and Fannie Walt Alley.

Mrs. Grose was a homemaker and had been a resident of Florida for 25 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Bernard Thornton in 1971; two sons, Robert Thornton and Greg Thornton; and one daughter, Linda Gwinn; four sisters, Sylvia Conner, Molly Taylor, Hazel Gilbert and Virginia Pugh.

Survivors include her husband, Roy Grose of Florida; three sons, Donald Thornton and his wife Betty of Herndon, Larry Thornton and his wife Dororthy of Bud and Mark Thornton and his wife Marie of Starke, FL; two daughters, Tina Campbell and her husband Robert of Covel, with whom she made her home, and Michelle Wormald and her husband Gary of Orlando, FL; one sister, Ruth Parcell and her husband Curtis of Beckley; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Ralph Decker
October 19, 2008

PRINCETON – Rev. Ralph Norwood Decker, 81, of 906 Thorn Street, Princeton, died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born October 29, 1926 at Botetourt County, VA, he was the son of the late Carl Decker and Mamie Goad Decker.

Mr. Decker was a veteran of the US Navy during World War II. He retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem, Virginia after more than 30 years of service. He had been a resident of Princeton for the last 33 years, previously living in Roanoke, Virginia. He was the pastor and founder of The Lord Jesus Tabernacle in Bluefield. He was a truly remarkable husband and wonderful father. He had a variety of interests, including his family, his church and gardening. He never met a stranger.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include the love of his life and wife of 56 years, Eddie Marie Elledge Decker; one son, Dannie Decker and his wife Claudette of Nashville, TN; three daughters, Cynthia Monk and her husband Les of Tazewell, VA, Carolyn Duncan and her husband James of Athens and Regina Boyd and her husband Jeff of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Imogene Perdue of Vinton, VA and Pauline Brooks of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren, Stephanie Masseth and her husband Kevin of Myrtle Beach, SC and Monica Decker, Derek Decker and Cameron Decker all of Nashville, TN. He also leaves behind a large extended family, all of whom will miss him dearly.

Byron Shrewsbury

BEESON – Byron D. Shrewsbury, 51, of Beeson, died Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born September 27, 1957 at Princeton, he was the son of Denvil Shrewsbury and Joyce Tedder Shrewsbury of Pinoak.

Mr. Shrewsbury was an employee of the Mercer County Board of Education for more than 20 years and was currently employed as a custodian at Athens Middle School. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a very quiet and gentle person with a sweet spirit. He liked to fish with his little buddy, “Tootie.” He was a loving husband, father, brother and son; the best father in the world.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Mary Akers Shrewsbury of the home; one son, Jereme Shrewsbury of Beeson and his fiancé Mandy Gillum; one daughter, Amy Lowe and her husband Freddie of Beeson; two grandchildren, Alaura Mitchem and Ariella Lowe; two sisters, Cindy Dorman and her husband Steven and Sonia O’Dell and her husband Patrick all of Princeton; one brother, Brett Shrewsbury and his wife Diana of Pinoak; a son-in-law, Brian Mitchem of Kegley; and his special pet dog Weenie, “Tootie.”

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the Shrewsbury Cemetery at Nubbins Ridge with Pastor Reginald Blakewood officiating.

Serving as pallbearers will be Earnie Shrewsbury, E.J. Shrewsbury, Jordan Shrewsbury, Elmer Harmon, Pat O’Dell and Brett Shrewsbury. Steven Dorman will serve as honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.

MURFREESBORO, TN – Michael James Thompson, 35, of Murfreesboro, TN, formerly of Princeton, went to be with our Heavenly Father on Friday, October 17, 2008 at his home. Born December 18, 1972 in Princeton, he was the son of Randy Thompson and Carol Blankenship Thompson of Lashmeet.

Mike was a loving husband, son, father, brother and friend and will be truly missed by all that knew and loved him. He loved spending time in the outdoors and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, James W. Blankenship; and his paternal grandparents, Fielder and Myrtle Thompson.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving and precious wife of 7 years, Barbara Ann Farmer Thompson of Murfreesboro, TN; two brothers, Randy Thompson, Jr. and his fiancé Cindy Johnson of Sherrills Ford, NC and Kevin Thompson and his wife Lynn of Princeton; one step-son, Ronnie Carden of the home; one step-daughter, Billie Joe Carden of Nashville, TN, two nieces and two nephews, Blake, Brooke and Levi Thompson all of Sherrills Ford, NC and Taylor Thompson of Princeton; and one step-granddaughter, Hailee Jo McDaniel of Murfreesboro, TN.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Michael’s uncle, Edward Warden, officiating. Interment will follow at the Thompson Family Cemetery on the Double T Farm Road in Princeton.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ronnie Carden, Teddy Pettrey, Thomas Hall, Blake Thompson, Duane Thompson and Rick Thompson.

James Robert Bowling
October 11, 2008

WOODLAWN, TN – James Robert Bowling, 76, of Woodlawn, TN, formerly of Princeton, died Saturday, October 11, 2008 at his home. Born April 25, 1932 at Hiawatha, he was the son of the late Cerling B. Bowling and Josephine Gertrude Hale Bowling.

Mr. Bowling was a retired salesman for Virginia Foods. He was a member of the Church of Christ on New Hope Road in Princeton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Bowling and Louise Bowling; and one brother, Claude Wiley Bowling.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Meadows Bowling of the home; three sons, Kevin Bowling and his wife Tess of Princeton, Randy Hatcher and his wife Denise of Little Egg Harbor, NJ and Rick Hatcher and his wife Joan of Cape May Courthouse, NJ; three daughters, Deborah Fike and her husband Donald and Roberta Bowling all of Woodlawn, TN and Angela Ellis and her husband Shane of Kistler; one brother, Cerling B. Bowling, Jr. of Mullens; one sister, Sylvia Jean Flanigan and her husband Richard of Princeton; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Terry Lambert officiating. Interment will follow at the Bowling Cemetery at Spanishburg.

Serving as pallbearers will be Frank Watkins, David Lambert, Jerry Thompson, Pat Carter, Larry Cecil and Harry Mann.

Doris Griffieth
October 8, 2008

PRINCETON – Doris L. Griffieth, 76, of GlenWood Park Retirement Home, Princeton, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at her home. Born September 9, 1932 at Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Branscome and Aline Vest Branscome.

Mrs. Griffieth was a graduate of Matoaka High School. Following graduation, she worked for the F.B.I. for a short time. She retired from Kentucky Central Insurance Co. after 33 years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin E. Griffieth, Sr; and one son, Jeffrey L. Griffieth.

Survivors include five sons, Ben Griffieth and his wife Donna of Richmond, KY and David Griffieth and his wife Mercy, Kenneth Griffieth and his wife Vicki, Phillip Griffieth and his wife Delores and Richard Griffieth and his wife Diana all of Lexington, KY; two sisters, Barbara Hughes and her husband Jim and Jane Arrington all of Princeton; five brothers, Edwin “Buddy” Branscome and his wife Ruth, Charles “Buck” Branscome and his wife Edith and Joe Branscome and his wife Patty all of Princeton, Bill Branscome and his wife Maxine of Richmond, VA and Ross Branscome and his wife Pauline of Kernersville, NC; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. The body will be cremated following the service. Entombment will be at the Bluegrass Gardens in Lexington, KY at a later date.

Ernie Howerton
October 4, 2008

MATOAKA – Ernest D. “Ernie” Howerton, 58, of Matoaka, went home to be with his Lord, Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born June 26, 1950 at Bluefield, he was the son of the late Luther Howerton and Florence Sargent Howerton.

Mr. Howerton was retired from Eastern Consolidated Coal Co. at Herndon and was a member of the U.M.W.A. Fall was his favorite time of the year and he loved to hunt and fish.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Shutt, Marie Thompson and Nellie Ramsey; and one brother, Roosevelt “Posey” Howerton.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Nancy Pugalee Howerton of the home; one son, Randy “Boo Boo” Howerton and his wife Katrina of Matoaka; two daughters, Marie “Tweety” Perdue and her fiancé Eric Shrewsbury of Lashmeet and Shelly “Put Put” Morgan and her husband Jamie of Herndon; six grandchildren, Randy “B.J.” Howerton, Alley Howerton, David “Shorty” Perdue, Kayla Perdue, Jr. “Goober” Morgan and Hannah Morgan; two sisters, Imogene Wix of Sophia and Betty Grandi of Texas; four brothers, Bennett Howerton and his wife Betty of Princeton, Johnny Howerton of Clarks Gap, Dewey Howerton and his wife Deloris of Lake Bottom and special friend and brother Roger Howerton and his wife of Alabama; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Ruth O’Dell Pugalee of Matoaka.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastors Ron Thomure and L.A. Farmer officiating. Interment will follow at the Miller Community Cemetery at Clark’s Gap. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
