Charles Moore
August 29, 2010

ROANOKE, VA – Charles E. Moore, 63, of Roanoke, VA, formerly of Princeton and Hiawatha, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Born January 20, 1947 at Bluefield, he was the son of Pauline S. Bailey Moore of Princeton and the late Elmer Lee Moore.

Mr. Moore worked in Bluefield for Norfolk-Southern Railroad as a dispatcher clerk for 38 years. He was a member of the Matoaka Christian Church. He loved people and making friends. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved fishing and was a NASCAR fan. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of four years, Judy Brown Moore of Roanoke, VA; one uncle, Burley Moore of Beaumont, NC; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Tracy French officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Jeremy Weeks
August 24, 2010

LASHMEET – Jeremy Scott Weeks, 27, of Lashmeet, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Princeton Community Hospital from natural causes. Born July 26, 1983 at Charleston, he was the son of Mary Davis Weeks of Lashmeet and her companion Johnny Shrewsbury and the late Dannie Ray Weeks.

Jeremy was a 2002 graduate of PikeView High School and was a member of Bailey Memorial Baptist Church at Giatto. He loved people and never met a stranger. He loved to go to church and always had a smile on his face.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Rachael Weeks; his maternal grandparents, William and Maxine Davis; and a sister, Debbie Williams.

In addition to his mother, survivors include four brothers, Chad Gaeto of Lashmeet, Joshua Weeks and his wife Trisha of Tallahassee, FL, Larry Weeks and his wife Jennifer of Falls Mills, VA and Danny Weeks and his wife Kelly of Oklahoma City, OK; special little brother, Isaac Jones of Princeton; special aunt and uncle, Bob and Ruby Weeks of Oakvale whom he loved dearly; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. Larry Bailey and Tom Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Weeks, Nick Shaw, Johnny Shrewsbury, Rex Shrewsbury, Richard Tiller, Ronnie Tiller and Larry Weeks.

Robert Mitchem
August 23, 2010

ROCK - Robert Edison Mitchem, 64, of Rock died Monday, August 23, 2010 at his home. Born June 6, 1946 at Bishop, VA he was the son of the late Ed Mitchem and Annie Grace Neel Mitchem.

Mr. Mitchem was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Vietnam. He was a self employed truck driver and former employee of E. B. Electric Boat in Groton, CT. He loved his daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed helping others and fishing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Robinette.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Mary Farmer Mitchem of Rock; five daughters, Bessie Harrison and her husband Mark of Lakeland, FL, Brenda Roberts and her husband John of Conway, SC, Connie Rogers and her husband Justin of Myrtle Beach, SC, Nancy Young and her husband Joshua of Galivants Ferry, SC and Keisha Farmer and her fiancé Bruce Davis of Athens; one brother, Roy Mitchem and his wife Julie of Wisconsin; one sister, Linda DeLorge and her husband Jim of Norwich, CT; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Interment will follow at the Farmer Family Cemetery at Blackoak in Princeton where military rites will be conducted by the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veterans Council.

Serving as pallbearers will be John Roberts, Justin Rogers, Michael Littlefield, Johnny Littlefield, Robbie Littlefield, Brian Lewis, Emory Jones and Steve Williams.

Clinton Duncan
August 18, 2010

BLUEFIELD - Clinton Duncan, 59, of Bluefield died Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at his home. Born November 21, 1950 in Mercer County he was the son of the late Harley Garfield Duncan and Cora Alice Carrico Duncan.

He was a former employee of Compton Construction Company in Princeton.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Linda Mathena Duncan; one son, Michael Wayne Duncan and his wife Lana of Beckley; one daughter, Amy Marie Duncan of the home; two step-grandsons, Tyler Ryan Sizemore and Dakota Sizemore both of Beckley; one sister-in-law, Patricia Walker and her husband, Richard of Princeton; one brother-in-law, Joseph Mathena and his wife, Delores of Princeton and a special friend, Richard Hager of Bluefield.

Donna Sue McPherson
August 17, 2010

LERONA – Donna Sue McPherson, 52, of Lerona, died Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Born June 20, 1958 at Beaufort, NC, she was the daughter of the late James Rufus Ward, Jr. and Nancy Gadd Whitlow of Princeton.

Ms. McPherson was a graduate of Athens High School and Concord College. She had a master’s degree from Marshall University in education with a specialization in reading. She had taught at Mercer, Glenwood and Straley Elementary schools. She loved animals and was an avid gardener. She enjoyed the outdoors and four wheeling.

In addition to her mother, survivors include her soulmate of eight years, Billy Hazelwood of Lerona; one daughter, Amy McPherson of Princeton; one son, Adam McPherson and his wife, Danielle serving in the U.S. Navy in Coronado, CA; three sisters, Debbie Lucas and her husband Glen of Peterstown, Wanda Folks and her companion Butch Burdette of Fairlawn, VA and Beth Edwards of Princeton; one brother, Michael Ward of Princeton; one step-grandson, Layne Haidet of Coronado, CA.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer and Minister Danny Hazelwood officiating. Honoring Donna’s request, the body has been cremated.

Mabel "Deebie" Moye
August 16, 2010

PRINCETON – Mabel “Deebie” Moye, 90, of Princeton, formerly of Pinoak died Monday, August 16, 2010 at her home. Born December 6, 1919 at Pinoak she was the daughter of the late Straley and Lillie Shrewsbury.

Mrs. Moye was a member of Cook’s Chapel Church at Pinoak and last attended Rich Creek Baptist Church in Spanishburg. She was a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Corbet Moye in 1986; three brothers, Cletus R. Carr, Emery Shrewsbury and Daynard Shrewsbury and two sisters, Wootsie Shrewsbury and Goldie Thompson.

Survivors include two sons, Darrell Moye and wife Carol of Black Oak and John Moye and wife Elma of Pettry, with whom she made her home; two daughters, Bernice Hamm and husband Glenn of Reece Harmon Ridge and Lenna Frye and husband Earl of Rockwell, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Ralph Calfee officiating. Interment will follow at the Reid Cemetery in Spanishburg. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Gaylord R. White, Sr.
August 14, 2010

LAKE SHAWNEE – Gaylord Roger White, Sr., 70, of Lake Shawnee went to live with the Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, August 14, 2010. Born July 9, 1940 in Covel, he was the son of the late Dewey C. and Etta P. Lindsay White.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Darrell K. White and Paul D. White.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years this winter, Jewell D. White; They have four sons, Gaylord R. White, II, Chris A. White and wife Charlotte Taylor White, Jade D. White and wife Melissa Kosinar White and Shawn H.White; four brothers, Rance L. White and wife Alice, Harold D. White and wife Ruby, Maynard F. White and Chester L. White and wife Connie; one sister Barbara White Bolden and husband Roy; one sister-in law, Maxine White; 10 grandchildren, Tabitha White, Frankie White, Donald Pendergrass, Cara Pendergrass, Justin Pendergrass, Christian White, Jamison White, Jalyn White, Slate White and Shawna White; 5 great grandchildren.

A time of celebration and remembering will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton. Rev. Ronald Miller and family members will reflect on the life of Mr. White.

Melba Martin
August 11, 2010

PRINCETON – Melba (Nanny) Martin, 86, of Princeton, formerly of Piedmont, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at her home. Born December 24, 1923 at Nallen, she was the daughter of the late Lanty Johnson and step father Omar Minter and Margaret Withrow Johnson Minter.

Mrs. Martin worked for more than 22 years in the Wyoming General Hospital in Mullens as a delivery room nurse. She worked for 5 years at GlenWood Park Retirement Village and then worked as a caregiver for many of her friends until her retirement in 2006 due to declining health. She was an active member of Ridgeview Church of God in Lashmeet. Her greatest love in life was her Lord and Savior. She enjoyed reading her Bible, gardening, crocheting and spending time with her family. She loved all types of sports, especially the Cincinnati Reds, WVU football and basketball and Nascar driver, Mark Martin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest A. Martin in 1964, who was the love of her life and the father of her 7 children; two sons, Charles A. Martin and Wilbert L. Martin; a grandson, Shawn Martin; two infant great-grandchildren; four sisters, Viola Ransbarger, Peninah Ramsey, Jacki Mitchell and Nancy Jo Minter; and two brothers, Delbert Johnson and Cecil Johnson.

Survivors include three sons, Robert E. Martin and his wife Wanda of Lashmeet and Richard T. Martin and his wife Sherri of Princeton and Gregory L. Martin and his wife Sandy all of Princeton; two daughters, Margaret R. Shrewsberry and her husband Richard (Skip), with whom she made her home for the past four years and Lelia Y. Boyd and her husband John Sr. of Princeton, two daughters-in-law, Rema Martin of Wirtz, VA and Luwanna Martin of Piedmont; two sisters, Yvonne Gardner of Avon, OH and Nona Irby and her husband Jack of Huntington; one brother, Donald Minter of Delaware; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 4 great, great-grandchildren; and her church family and numerous friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. L.A. Farmer, Lyle Mullins and Jerry Heaton officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Beckley. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Frankie Jennings
August 5, 2010

LASHMEET- Frankie Jennings, 78, of Lashmeet passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2010 in Lashmeet. Born August 8, 1931 at Weyanoke, he was the son of the late Hobert and Nanny Belle Gross Jennings.

He served his country during the Korean War as a Sergeant in the U. S. Army. He was a retired coal miner with more than 30 years of service and was a member of U.M.W.A. Local 8784. Poppy loved to hunt and was a great neighbor and friend to all who met him. He always had a candy bar and a pop for all who came to see him. He never turned away anyone and made everyone he knew feel welcome. We will all miss him greatly and the stories he told will live in our hearts forever.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Kyle (Boogie) Jennings, Woodrow Jennings, Otis Jennings, Clifford Jennings, Albert Jennings, Bobbie Jennings and Roland Jennings; two sisters, Joyce Dickerson and Janice Jennings.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Oma Willadeane Walker Jennings, whom he married on August 8, 1953; he was a loving father to three sons, Frankie Dean Jennings and his wife, Teresa of Lashmeet, Barry Jennings and his wife, Tammy of Lashmeet and Denton Jennings and Whitney of Roanoke, VA; one daughter, Glennette Clisso and husband, Mike of Lashmeet; nine grandchildren, Derek Jennings and his wife, Jennifer of Wallback, Brenton Jennings, Kaylyn Jennings, Zachary Jennings and his fiancé, Ashley and Tess Jennings all of Lashmeet; McKenzie Jennings and Laken Jennings both of Roanoke, VA; Shawn Clisso and Monika Clisso both of Lasmeet and one special little great granddaughter, Cara Jennings who is the daughter of Derek and Jennifer; five brothers, Harley Jennings, Gerald Jennings, Ray Jennings and his wife, Phyllis, Junior Jennings and his wife, Polly and Billy Jennings; two sisters, Flossie Watkins and Louise Hodge.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Randolph Dishner and Rev. Larry Cecil officiating. Interment will follow at Red Oak Family Cemetery in Pinoak. Military honors will be conducted by the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veterans Council.

Ann Esther Syres
August 5, 2010

PRINCETON - Ann Esther Wood Syres, 92, of Mary’s Elder Care in Princeton, died peacefully on August 5, 2010, at her residence. Born September 16, 1917 in Hinton, WV, she was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Etta Williams Wood of Matoaka.

A graduate of Matoaka High School, Esther worked for Hadden’s Department Store before marrying her wonderful husband, Clayton Syres, in November of 1938. During World War II, while Clayton served his country in the Army, she relocated to Wilmington, Delaware where she worked for the United States Government as a warship and carrier inspector. Most of her life was spent as a homemaker, but she also worked as a ballot commissioner during local and national elections for approximately 30 years. A loving and wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Esther liked to cook, travel, knit, crochet and was an avid reader.

The greatest moment of Esther’s life was when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior--for He made all the difference. She and her husband were instrumental in the inception and construction of the Matoaka Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, and was a member of a local gospel quartet that performed on the radio and at numerous religious gatherings. After relocating to Princeton in 1980, Immanuel Baptist Church became her church family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Allen Syres, in 1985; her two brothers Joseph Earl Wood of Bradshaw, WV (and his wife Gladys) and Nathan Wood of Florida.

Esther is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and William Clark of Princeton, WV, by her granddaughter and her husband, Allyson and W.C. Wilkerson of Roanoke, Virginia, and by her two great grandsons, Gavin and Holden Wilkerson of Roanoke. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Maxine Syres of Rock, Pauline Whitlow of Rich Creek, Virginia, and Mable Wood of Florida, and by several nieces and nephews (especially Larry Wood and his wife Pat of McGaheysvillle, Virginia) and numerous cousins.

During the last ten months of her life Esther received loving and special care from her friends and care-givers at Mary’s Elder Care: Mary and Freddie Heath, Martha Parker, Nadeen Tomlinson, Alicia Parker and Leanna Fuller. She was also blessed to make special friends and to have wonderful assisted living help at The Havens of Princeton, where she lived for one year.

The honor of serving the Syres family has been given to Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home of Princeton where funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 with the Rev. Dr. Dan Jividen officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service time. Burial will follow in The Lord’s Supper garden at Roselawn Cemetery in Princeton with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family knows that Esther would appreciate contributions in her memory to the Immanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 264 New Hope Road, Princeton, WV 24740.

Joann Paciona
August 1, 2010

DELAWARE CITY, DE - Mrs. H. Joann Paciona, 68, of Delaware City, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at her home. Born March 8, 1942 in Pawama, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Sparks and Beulah Grace Dickens Sparks.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Paciona worked as a counselor for Northeast Treatment Center. A dedicated mother and talented homemaker, she enjoyed gardening and crafting in her leisure hours.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Donald M. Smith, Eddie, Roy R., Johnny M., Robert L., and John W. Sparks; and a sister, Linda D. Sparks.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 49 years, Jimmy Paciona; son, James A. Paciona and wife, Maria of New Castle, DE; daughters, Tina M. Hager and husband, David of Elkton, MD, and Lisa A. Diehl and husband, Eric of Delaware City, DE; brothers, Charles R. Sparks, and wife, Emma of Powhatan, VA, Eugene Sparks of Lashmeet, WV, Richard L. Sparks and wife, Darlene of Rock, WV, and Danny W. Sparks and wife, Peggy of Pinoak, WV; sister, Carol S. Floyd and husband, Larry of Delaware City, DE; grandchildren, Grace N. and Emma R. Diehl, and Colby J. Hager; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Darrell Crotty, Sr.
July 27, 2010

KEGLEY- Darrell Dee “Buddy” Crotty, Sr., 73, of Kegley died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Beckley VA Medical Center. Born August 11, 1936 in Kegley he was the son of the late Howard Richard Crotty and Thelma Lee Patterson Crotty.

Mr. Crotty was of the Christian faith. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force serving during the Korean conflict. He loved working and had a passion for his family history and had gathered a large archive through his research of his family tree. He loved antique cars and owned many through the years.

Survivors include two sons, Darrell D. Crotty, Jr. and wife, Theresa Ellen of Benson, North Carolina and Gregory Dwayne Crotty of Bland, Virginia; three daughters, Theresa Ramsey and husband, William of Bland, Virginia, Veronica Said of Bluefield and Sharon Tickle and husband Larry of Shawsville, Virginia; one sister, Shirley Stinnette of Dundalk, Maryland; three brothers, Howard Ronnie Crotty of Fort Worth , Texas, Dennis Ray Crotty of Kegley and Kenneth Gary Crotty of Edgewood, Maryland; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and many cherished nieces and nephews.

There will be no services at the funeral home. The family will have a private service on his birthday, August 11, 2010. In keeping with his wishes, the body has been cremated.

Gussie Blankenship
July 24, 2010

SPENCER, OH – After a long struggle with health issues, Gussie Blankenship left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday evening, July 24th, 2010. Gussie was the eighth of eleven children born to Joseph and Della (nee Roberts) Bailey in Lamar, West Virginia on August 8th, 1934.

Gussie married James E. Blankenship, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she worked for General Electric Company for several years. Gussie and James started their family and relocated to Spencer, Ohio. With much love, devotion and hard work she raised her children on their farm in the country. Later on, she coordinated activities for the residents at Webers Nursing Home in Wellington, Ohio. She also devoted her time to many friends she helped care for and assist in their time of need. Gussie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spencer, Ohio for many years. No matter the time or situation, she was always there for family and friends. Whether you knew her for a long or short period of time, you knew Gussie for all of the wonderful reasons that made her the sweet person that she was. We will always remember her loving, caring and giving ways. She was truly a beautiful person from inside and out that always shined. She will always be in our hearts and minds. What a privilege it has been for each and every one of us to have had her in our lives. She is at rest now.

Gussie is survived by son, James E. She was preceded in death by her husband James E. Blankenship, son Kenneth, parents, brothers Ray, Frank, Dewey, Lonnie, Joseph (Donald) and Dale Bailey and sister Versie Yonther.

BRADENTON, FL - Raymond Bradley Sisk, 26, of Bradenton, FL, passed away Friday, July 23, 2010 at his home. Born March 23, 1984 in Bluefield, he was the son of Robert and Lucille Sisk of Bluefield.

After growing up in Bluefield, he was a 2003 graduate of Providence High School in Providence, KY. Raymond was employed at Ace Hardware. He had achieved his life-long dream of living and working in Florida. He loved the sun and the sea, and was involved with several animal rescue organizations.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Joy and Faye Everson; paternal grandfather, Rex Berkeley Sisk; and an uncle, Larry Everson.

In addition to his parents, survivors include one sister, Joy Kinser and her husband Eddie of Bluefield; paternal grandmother, Harriet Sisk of Princeton; an aunt, Julia Johnson of Jacksonville, FL; two cousins, Sgt. David Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA and Sgt. Wesley Johnson of Jacksonville, FL; two nephews, Donte Sisk and Sam Kinser both of Bluefield; special friend, Stephanie White; and his English Bulldog, Bandit.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bluefield.

LASHMEET – Jacqueline Yvette Bailey Nelson, 39, of Lashmeet, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Born September 28, 1970 at Schukyll Haven, PA, she was the daughter of Bobby R. Bailey of Lashmeet Barbara Abram of Charlotte, NC.

Mrs. Nelson was of the Church of God faith. She was a 1988 graduate of Spanishburg High School. She was a registered nurse and worked for the Virginia Prison System in Richmond and Charlottesville. She enjoyed the outdoors and animals.

In addition to her parents, survivors include one son, Russell C. “Jake” Johnston, III and his wife Amber Mae of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Veronica Robinson and her husband Scott of Charlotte, NC; very special nephew, David Scott of Charlottesville, NC; very special uncle, Snoop Abram; and many aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 7:00 p.m. at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Kenneth Abram officiating.

PRINCETON – George Michael Harvey, Jr., 37, of Princeton, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2010 with his wife, Sheila Ann Masters Harvey. Born June 12, 1973 at Princeton, he was the son of George Michael Harvey, Sr. of Princeton and Barbara Weis Harvey Crigger of Princeton.

Michael was of the Christian faith. He was a construction worker. He was an avid reader and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He loved his wife and children very much.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Floyd and Margaret Harvey; and his maternal grandparents, Fred and Marylee Weis.

In addition to his parents, survivors include two sons, Rhett Forrest Harvey and Dallas Ryan Harvey both of the home; one brother, Chad Harvey of Orlando, FL; one sister, Michelle Harvey Burks of Princeton; step-father, Tommy Crigger of Princeton; and step-mother, Barbara Ann Harvey of Princeton.

Sheila was of the Christian faith and was a homemaker. She loved animals, writing poetry and enjoyed camping. She was a former nursing assistant in Tennessee. She was very family oriented, affectionate and loved her children.

In addition to her parents, survivors include four children, William Dowell Harmon, IV of Kegley, Brandon Charles Harmon of Lake Bottom and Rhett Forrest Harvey and Dallas Ryan Harvey both of the home; one granddaughter, Alexis Harmon of Kegley; one brother, Anthony Phillip Masters of Lindside; two sisters, Laura June Masters Delp and her husband Timmy and Tonya Leigh Delp and her husband David all of Princeton; maternal grandmother, Della M. Farmer of Rock; and paternal grandmother, Frances Masters of Kegley.

Michael Pauley
July 15, 2010

PRINCETON - Michael W. Pauley, 58, of Princeton died Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. He now rests in the arms of God – free from pain and the too long scourges of rheumatic induced heart disease and accompanying secondary conditions. Born November 25, 1951 in Madison, West Virginia he was the son of Mary Susan Meadows Pauley of Princeton Health Care Center in Princeton and the late Wilmer Wetzel Pauley who preceded him in death in 1997.

Michael graduated from Montgomery High School in Montgomery, West Virginia in 1969, attended West Virginia Tech in Montgomery, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Concord College in 1973, earned a Masters Degree in Special Education from WVCOGS in 1978, earned a Masters Degree in School Psychology and completed an Educational Specialist Degree from Radford University in 1986. His career in education took him from McDowell County Schools in 1973 to Peterstown Elementary in Monroe County, to Mercer County Schools as a Special Education Specialist, to Wyoming, Summers and Raleigh County Schools as a School Psychologist. He then served as a Coordinator of Special Education in Raleigh County Schools before transferring to Mercer County Schools as Assistant Director of Special Education. Due to failing health he retired in December 2008.

Accomplishments and prior organization affiliations include being a Golden Horseshoe Winner, National Honor Society, Concord College Key Club, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Monroe County Special Olympics Coach, Mercer County Soccer League Coach, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, National Association of School Psychologists, West Virginia Association of School Psychologists, Glenwood Action Civitan Club, Who’s Who in America, Concord University Alumni Association, Pine Tree Chapter Alumni Association and West Virginia Association of Retired Personnel. He became a member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton in 1997.

When health allowed he enjoyed hiking, biking, traveling, gardening and cooking. Michael deeply loved and was very proud of his sons and wife, loved Vicki and Sarah as though they were his very own daughters and cherished every moment he had with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory in addition to his mother are his wife of 35 years, Julia Ann Grogan Pauley; two sons, Matthew David Pauley (Sarah) and Benjamin Alexander Pauley (Vicki); six grandchildren, Raygin Elizabeth Jenkins, Issac David Pauley, Trey Alexander Pauley, Jacob Tanner Pauley, Gracelyn Elizabeth Pauley and Emily Danielle Pauley all of Princeton; one sister, Dwillis G. Wallman (Jack) of Dade City, FL; nephews, John Paul Wallman (Deb) of Pittsburgh, PA and Mark Allen Wallman (Lee) of Boonton, NJ; niece, Mary Louise Wallman of Chicago, IL, grand nephews, Lance J. Wallman and Nicholas A. Wallman both of Morgantown and Silas Stutzel of Chicago, IL; aunt, Della Patterson of Culloden, many cousins and in-laws who respected and loved him dearly, his co-workers who knew him as a man of integrity and the caring medical staff of J5-1, Miller Pavilion, Cleveland Clinic, who had the privilege to witness and testify of the last days of Michael as a man of strength, grace and courage when faced with multiple challenges and disappointments.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at the First Baptist Church, 1116 Mercer Street, Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

LAKE SHAWNEE – Helen Mills, 89, of Lake Shawnee, died Monday, July 12, 2010 at her home. Born February 27, 1921 at Rock, she was the daughter of the late Lawson Syres and Rosa Bailey Syres.

Mrs. Mills was a member of Fairview Christian Community Church in Princeton where she was a member of VIP and enjoyed all the church activities and fellowshipping with her friends. She was a homemaker who loved to cook and crochet afghans. She especially enjoyed the company of her son’s poodle, Brown Eyes. She enjoyed life to the fullest with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mills in 1975; four sisters, Alice Wright, Georgia Trout, Bessie Meadwell and Virgie Hunter; five brothers, Dayton Syres, Clayton Syres, Leonard Syres, Woodrow Syres and Charlie Syres.; one granddaughter, Regina Smith; and a former son-in-law, Richard Allen Smith.

Survivors include one daughter, Connie Harmon and her husband Roy of Princeton; one son, Roger Mills and his wife Shirley of Lashmeet; one sister, Pauline Whitlow of Rich Creek, VA; three grandchildren, Kevin Harvey of Roanoke, VA and Christie Martinez and Miranda Lopez both of Statesville, NC; five step-grandchildren, Regina Harvey, Cindy Campbell, Clifton Carl Burnette, Jr., John Harmon and Shann Reagan; and numerous great-grandchildren.

BLUEFIELD, VA - Edna R. Orren, 87, of Bluefield, VA, formerly of Lashmeet, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Born August 7, 1922 at Dott, she was the daughter of the late James Jasper Rutherford and Rosa Ellen Lefler Rutherford.

Mrs. Orren was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She loved to spend time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Leonard Orren, Sr. in 1989; two sisters, Leetta Gillenwater and Rosie Gillenwater; two brothers, Straley Rutherford and Dean Rutherford; and a son-in-law, Jeffery Thompson.

Survivors include one son, James Leonard Orren, Jr. and his wife Sherry of Mt. Juliet, TN; three daughters, Marlene Salyer and her husband Danny of Bluefield, VA with whom she made her home for the past 10 years, Martha Thompson of Lashmeet and Linda Alvis and her husband Gary of Princeton; two sisters, Clemmie Brunk of Princeton and Geneva Davis of Hammond, IN; nine grandchildren, Angela, Stephanie, Alecia, Brandon, Eric, Aaron, Christa, Trey and Alex; and five great-grandchildren, Jessica, Kristen, Katelynn, Jerid and Connor.

BLUEFIELD- Neta Rose Shrewsbury, 87, of Bluefield died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Whittaker Care Home in Princeton. Born September 15, 1922 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Will Wiley and May Underwood Wiley.

She was a member of the Deliverance Temple at Brushfork. She was employed by a laundry in Lexington, NC for 22 years. She was homemaker and enjoyed making quilts, dolls and pillows. She loved her kids and grandkids.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Hobart Shrewsbury in 1952; one son, Esley Shrewsbury; three brothers, Hoy Wiley, James Wiley and Virgil Wiley and three sisters, Iva Corner, Easter Bragg and Elizabeth Graham.

Survivors include six children, Blaine Shrewsbury of Bluefield, Connie Shrewsbury, Creed Shrewsbury and his wife Betty, Glenroy Shrewsbury and his wife Maggie, Ray Shrewsbury and his wife Glenda and Sharon Hicks and her husband Johnny all of Lexington, NC; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Deliverance Temple in Brushfork with Pastor Dave Lusk officiating. Interment will follow at Elgood Cemetery in Elgood. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Larry Raymond Pennington

GLENWOOD- Larry Raymond Pennington, 66, of Glenwood, formerly of Matoaka died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Mercer Continuous Care in Bluefield. Born November 21, 1943 in Matoaka he was the son of the late Luther Pennington and Louise Siner Pennington.

Larry was a former employee of United Piece and Dye Works in Falls Mills, VA and served in the National Guard. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Rich Creek, VA. He retired from Peabody Coal Company after 35 years of service as a certified welder, electrician and EMT in the mines. He was a member of the UMWA. Larry was a member of Cowboy Shooters Gun Club, the NRA, Princeton Elks Lodge #1459 and Harley O. G. Riders. In his spare time he loved to do woodworking and enjoyed riding his Harley.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Sandy Higgins Pennington of the home; two brothers, Ronnie Pennington and his wife Renie of Abingdon, VA and Michael Pennington and his wife Ann of Bluefield, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Dr. Kent Davis, Wayne Sanders and Preacher Roger Hazelwood officiating. Helen Beggs

LASHMEET – Bonnie Helen Beggs, 86, of Lashmeet, went to sleep very peacefully Saturday, June 26, 2010 at McDowell Nursing and Rehabilitation at Gary. Born December 19, 1923 at Dott, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Daniel Beggs and Dossie Gray Sneed Beggs.

Mrs. Beggs was born into a family of eleven and is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a graduate of Matoaka High School, Concord College and West Virginia University. She received her master’s degree in Social Work at Western Reserve University. She taught school before entering social work. She especially loved working with children and the elderly. She touched and improved the lives of many people throughout her career. She was very much loved by the people she worked so hard to help. She was a very special person. Helen loved animals and nature and made the world a much kinder and better place and will be missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Beatrice Beggs, Mae Beggs, Marie Morris and Ethel Beggs; and six brothers, Forrest Beggs, Tommy Beggs, Glenoy Beggs, Shedrick Beggs, Hobert Beggs and Edward Beggs.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

The body has been cremated. There will be no services at the funeral home.

Elbert Quinton Huffman
June 21, 2010

MATOAKA – Elbert Quinton Huffman, 91, of Matoaka, died Monday, June 21, 2010 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born October 23, 1918 at Wenonah, he was the son of the late Eugene Andrew Huffman and Nancy Shrewsbury Huffman.

He was a coal miner and shot foreman for 17 years. He was a former employee of the Mercer County Board of Education and was a custodian at Matoaka High School for many years. He was a hard working man who enjoyed gardening and chopping wood. A man of few words, he was a wonderful dad and loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ora Reed Huffman in 2007; and one son, Lacy Allen Huffman; three sisters, Danie Thompson, Dandelion Carden and Cynthia Reed; three brothers, Dennie Toostout, Ed Huffman and Luke Huffman.

Survivors include three sons, Elbert Junior Huffman and his wife Anna Bell of Hiawatha, Curtis Loyd Huffman and his wife Lina of Lashmeet and Ronnie Dean Huffman and his wife Debbie of Princeton; two daughters, Doris Gail Shrewsbury and her husband David of Hobart, IN and Anita Raye Zrimsek and her husband Michael of Matoaka; one daughter-in-law, Rhonda Huffman of Kegley; eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

PRINCETON – Opal K. Sparks, 78, of Princeton, formerly of Matoaka, died Saturday, June 19, 2010 in Bluefield. Born March 5, 1932 at Dott, she was the daughter of the late Glen Scott and Susan Billings Scott.

Mrs. Sparks was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Matoaka Fire Dept. She loved to cook, sew and take care of her flower garden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Elmer Lee Sparks in 2005; four brothers, James Scott, Robert Scott, Leonard Scott and Dale Scott; a sister, Hazel Barlow; and a son-in-law, Randy Thompson.

Survivors include two sons, Johnnie Lee Sparks and his wife Debbie of Princeton and Jeffrey W. Sparks and his wife Laura of Bluefield; two daughters, Karen Thompson of Bluefield and Rhonda McKinney and her husband Daniel of Bluewell; one brother, Gene Scott of Snellsville, GA; two sisters, June Ervin and her husband Charles of Itmann and Betty Walker of Princeton; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

PIPESTEM – Chevy James Marsh, infant, of Pipestem, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born June 17, 2010 in Princeton, he was the son of William James Marsh and Christina Marie Shaver-Marsh of Pipestem.

In addition to his parents, survivors include one sister, Halie Lynn Shaver-Marsh and one brother, Ian James Marsh both of the home; and maternal grandparents, Topper and Bonnie Fralick of Narrows, VA.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with Pastors Louis "Tigger" Johnson and Eddie Day officiating. Friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home at 9:45 a.m.

TRINITY, NC - Pansy Marie Mills, 74, of Trinity, NC formerly of Lake Shawnee died Tuesday, June 16, 2010 at her home following a long hospital stay from pneumonia and pulmonary complications. Born December 28, 1935 at Rock she was the daughter of the late Carl Shrewsbury and Lydia Karnes Shrewsbury.

Mrs. Mills was of the Baptist faith. She was an employee of the Dean Company in Princeton for 28 years and retired in 1994. She had been a resident of Trinity, NC for 16 years. Mrs. Mills was a kind hearted person who enjoyed helping people, baking and gardening.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Mills; three sisters, Garnett Shrewsbury, Ruby Hurst and Opal Woolwine and one brother, Kenneth Shrewsbury.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Sneed of Trinity, NC and husband, Lonnie Sneed, Jr. and Karen Mills King of Princeton; three grandchildren, Vanessa King, Allissa King and Ashleigh King all of Princeton; one sister, Juanita Harrison and husband, Jim of Lugoff, SC and one brother-in-law, Wilmoth Hurst of Norfolk, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Larry Dyer and Rev. Norman Mills officiating. Interment will follow at Mills Cemetery at Beeson. Serving as pallbearers will be Roger Woolwine, Dale Sanders, Dean Harrison, Ronnie Mills, Donnie Mills and Jeff Ratliff.

LASHMEET – Shirley Ann Lusk, 65, of Lashmeet, died Friday, June 11, 2010 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born May 24, 1945 at McComas, she was the daughter of the late Henry Spicer and Myrtle Mathena Spicer.

Mrs. Lusk was a member of the Princeton Church of God. She was a homemaker and cherished her grandsons and loved spending time with them. She enjoyed collecting dolls and bells. She liked working crossword puzzles and enjoyed gospel music.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Dewayne Lusk in 2010.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Danny Lee Lusk; one son, Edward Lee Lusk of Hickory, NC; a daughter-in-law, Melissa Lusk of Lashmeet; three grandsons, Timmy Lusk of Lashmeet, Matthew Lusk of Princeton and Michael Lusk, Jr. of Lashmeet; four sisters, Martha Spicer of Woodland, TN, Opal Gross and her husband Dennis of Mt. Orab, OH, Janet Gary of Ft. Worth, TX and Barbara Richardson and her husband Jimmy of Bluefield; four brothers, Marvin Spicer and his wife Reva of Rocky Mount, VA, Charles Spicer and his wife Faye “Toots” of Rocky Mount, VA, Bobby Spicer and his wife Sue of White Sulpher Springs and Roger Spicer of Bassett, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Revs. L.A. Farmer and Fred Farley officiating. Interment will follow at the Odle Cemetery at Conner Mountain.

LASHMEET- Thomas Tyler Stables, 77, of Lashmeet died Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born June 18, 1932 at Narrows, VA he was the son of the late Bud Stables and Annie Siner Stables.

He was of the Methodist faith and was a retired carpenter. Mr. Stables loved his family very much. In his spare time he loved to cruise in his Jeep.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Louise Gray Stables in 2003; two sons, Timothy Tyler Stables and Tommy “Midge” Eugene Stables; three brothers, Garland Stables, Lee Stables and James Stables and two sisters, Nellie Sigmon and Dollie Smith.

He is survived by one son, Jimmy Darrell Stables and his wife, Charmaine of Lashmeet; two daughters, Linda Lane of Princeton and Patty Tickle and her husband Gary of Christiansburg, VA; three brothers, Roger Stables of Beckley, Billy Stables of Matoaka and Eugene Stables of Matoaka; three sisters, Judy Barlow of Lashmeet, Shirley Williams of Lashmeet and Peggy White of Princeton; nine grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; girlfriend, Judy Crane and special friends, Brian Green, Jason Tooley and David Wood.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Ralph Calfee and Rev. KEGLEY - Frances Sawyers Thornton, 84, of Kegley died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at her home. Born April 27, 1926 at Matoaka she was the daughter of the late Carl H. Sawyers and Ethel Wright Sawyers.

She was a loving mother, sister and housewife. She enjoyed growing and caring for her house flowers. Mrs. Sawyers was of the Church of God faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Thornton in December 2009, and one daughter, Jennifer Meadows.

She survived by two daughters, Frances Kathryn Gibney and husband, Ed of Orangeburg, SC and Deborah Thornton of Kegley; two grandchildren, Angela Meadows of Rocky Mount, NC and Eddie Gibney of Orangeburg, SC; one sister, Dovie Walker of Princeton and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Williams officiating. Interment will follow at the Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton.

MILTON – Chapman Rutledge, Jr., 83, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Born December 8, 1926 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Chapman Rutledge and Ruby Dooley Rutledge.

Mr. Rutledge served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from AEP after 38 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Blankenship Rutledge; two daughters, Debra Justice and her husband Charles and Pam Mancuso and her husband Frank; one son, Paul Harless; two sisters, Coraine Blankenship and Peggy Burson and her husband Fred; three grandchildren, Eric Justice and his wife Cindy, Chad Justice and his wife Wendy and Taylor Wilson; and one great-grandson, Daniel Justice.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 31, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Ralph Calfee officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

PRINCETON – Shirley Ann Curto, 75, of Princeton, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley. Born April 26, 1935 in Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Glen Williams and Opal Bolen Williams.

Mrs. Curto was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, loved animals and working on her computer. She was the last surviving member of her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Maggie Larry; and two brothers, Buck Williams and James “Jack” Williams.

Survivors include five children, Joe Curto of Princeton; Tony Curto and his wife Brenda of Wheeling, Melissa Woods and her husband John of Moundsville, Lori Broyles and her husband Paul of Princeton and Brian Curto and his wife Annie of Bluefied; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2010 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Gary Lyons officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Princeton.

PRINCETON – Merrell J. McMillion, 87, of Princeton, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the Salem Veterans Hospital in Salem, VA. Born August 10, 1922 at Giatto, he was the son of the late John Sewell McMillion and Bessie Melvine Quick McMillion.

Mr. McMillion was a veteran of World War II and was retired from The Dean Company.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ellen McMillion of Princeton; four children, James McMillion and his wife Patricia of Huntsville, AL, Denise McMillion of Princeton, Freda Farmer and her husband Buddy of Knoxville, TN and Timothy McMillion and his wife Latasha of Hillsdale, MI; seven grandchildren, David McMillion and his wife Amanda of Huntsville, AL, Cynthia and her husband Matt of Denver, CO, Brian Barlow of Princeton, Kristen Hurt of Knoxville, TN and Ryan, Brianna and Hunter McMillion all of Hillsdale, MI; and two great-grandsons, Caleb and Samuel McMillion both of Huntsville, AL.

Sylvia Pruett

PRINCETON – Sylvia Orlena “Ottie” Pruett, 62, of Princeton, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born February 2, 1948 at Princeton, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Posie Edward Hill and the Rev. Sylvia Mae Cochran Hill.

Ottie was a graduate of Princeton High School and Steed College in Johnston City, TN. She was an active member of Princeton Presbyterian Church where she was in the choir, and at one time, served on the board of the PPC Women, Hannah Circle leader and was a member of the Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Study for 16 years. She was Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter #53 and was a member of the Appalachian Unit #115 of the Airstream Club of which she was secretary and newsletter editor for many years. She was a former owner of Merle Norman Cosmetics for 15 years.

She leaves behind her beloved husband of 36 years, Donald H. Pruett of Princeton; two wonderful step-sons whom she loved as her own, Cy Edward Pruett of Cool Ridge and Tim Lee Pruett of Wake Forest, NC; two much loved grandsons, Tyler and Trevor Pruett; one brother, Howard Hill and his wife Betty of Princeton; and two sisters, Carroll Barth and her husband Wayne of Princeton; and Mary Naomi White and her husband Larry of Princeton.

A celebration of Ottie’s life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2010 at the Princeton Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ed Pettus officiating. Entombment will follow at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Princeton.

Nieces and nephews will serve as pallbearers, Keith Hayes, Brooks Hayes, Cy Gadd, Eddie Lewis, Anita Bowling and Lori Blevins.
